We bring together some known ingredients beyond the standard model physics that can explain the hot big bang model with the observed baryon asymmetry and also the fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background radiation with a minimal set of assumptions. We propose an interesting scenario where the inflaton energy density is dumped into an infinitely large extra dimension. Instead of the infla...

People living in the plateaus of Colorado or New Mexico receive about 1.5 mSv more per year than those living near sea level. The added dose from cosmic rays during a coast-to-coast round trip flight in a commercial airplane is about 0.03 mSv. Altitude plays a big role, but the largest source of background radiation comes from radon gas in our homes (about 2 mSv per year). Like other sources of...

We report on the accuracy of the measurement of the two photon decay width of a Higgs boson with the mass of 120 GeV at the TESLA Photon Collider, assuming a γγ integrated luminosity of 80 fb−1 in the hard part of the spectrum. The QCD radiative corrections for the quark pair background processes are taken into account by a reweighting procedure. We found that the product Γ(H → γγ)×BR(H → bb̄) c...

A method of estimating the number of people in crowded scenes was proposed based on energy of the foreground image in the frequency domain. Firstly, the foreground image including the target area was obtained by background subtraction. And furthermore, with the second order wavelet decomposition of the foreground image, the energy of high frequency sub-band was computed. Finally, by analyzing t...

A method is developed to distinguish between cars and trucks present in a video feed of a highway. The method builds upon previously done work using covariance matrices as an accurate descriptor for regions. Background subtraction and other similar proven image processing techniques are used to identify the regions where the vehicles are most likely to be, and a distance metric comparing the ve...

Resonant interactions between energetic electrons and whistler mode waves are an essential ingredient in the space environment, and in particular in controlling the dynamic variability of Earth's natural radiation belts, which is a topic of extreme interest at the moment. Although the theory describing resonant wave-particle interaction has been present for several decades, it has not been hith...

A new robust method to segment foreground regions from color video sequences using multiple thresholds and morphological processes is proposed. Background models are observed for a long time, and their mean and standard deviation are used for background subtraction. Shadow regions are eliminated using color components, and the final foreground silhouette is extracted by smoothing the boundaries...

We examine reduction of phase jitter by use of in-line Butterworth filters in soliton systems in the context of differential phase-shift-keying coding. We also demonstrate numerically that the use of a Butterworth filter in a return-to-zero differential phase-shift-keying system can reduce continuum background radiation.

We propose a region-based method to extract foreground regions from colour video sequences. The foreground region is decided by voting with scores from background subtraction to the sub-regions by graphbased segmentation. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm improves on conventional approaches especially in strong shadow regions.
