When we look at and compare examples of hitherto known traditional arts, we come across many linguistic, expressive, and even formal differences. Giving the mere title of “traditional” to the works produced in the Islamic era and even earlier is due to the failure to consider and explain a high art period in the Persian art; a period to incorporate a number of such works and to exclude them fro...
Liminality is a concept introduced by Victor Turner in the field of anthropology. According to him, myths can be designated as liminal phenomena which are neither here nor there; they are betwixt and between. Bill Viola is a video artist who has represented universal and pivotal dualities in his work, in a symbolic manner. The questions that this study tries to answer are as follows: What is th...

This article aimes to emphasize certain points concerning traditional art , and to put forward a question. As the term” Traditional art” is rather ambiguous, first we try to clarify it. To do so, we propose an approach somehow different from one generally admitted. Thereby, we discuss the reasons why it is not so easy to give a definition of traditional art, islamic art in particular, specially...
In 2006 Mitchell demonstrated that implicit memory was robust to decay. He showed that the ability to identify fragments of pictures seen 17 years before was significantly higher than for new stimuli. Is this true only for implicit memory? In this study, we tested whether explicit memory was still possible for drawings (n = 144) that had been presented once or three times, two seconds each time...
This paper focuses on a variation of the Art Gallery problem that considers open edge guards and open mobile guards. A mobile guard can be placed on edges and diagonals of a polygon, and the “open” prefix means that the endpoints of such edge or diagonal are not taken into account for visibility purposes. This paper studies the number of guards that are sufficient and sometimes necessary to gua...
on this volume, which contained many beautiful drawings and original scientific contributions. The actual inception of the Journal has been recorded by Mr. L. M. Griffiths, for seventeen years Assistant Editor.1 After referring to the preceding Transactions, he continued : " Another four years passed (i.e. 1882) and some members of the Committee thought the time had arrived for the publication ...
We explore the art gallery problem for the special case that the domain (gallery) P is an mpolyomino, a polyform whose cells are m unit squares. We study the combinatorics of guarding polyominoes in terms of the parameter m, in contrast with the traditional parameter n, the number of vertices of P . In particular, we show that ⌊ 3 ⌋ point guards are always sufficient and sometimes necessary to ...
This paper presents an approach to the computational use of drawings through the development of complexity measures, defined as the information content of the description of a drawing’s structure. As such it is the function of the representation used. The paper presents examples of the use of such measurements applied to design drawings of architects.
