We have identified two individuals from Glasgow in Scotland who have a deletion of one of two copies of the intergenic 9-bp sequence motif CCCCCTCTA, located between the cytochrome oxidase II (COII) and lysine tRNA (tRNA(Lys)) genes of the human mitochondrial genome. Although this polymorphism is common in Africa and Asia, it has not been reported in Northern Europe. Analysis of the mitochondri...

The mutation causing the Silverblue color type (pp) is one of the most used recessive mutations within American mink (Neovison vison) fur farming, since it is involved in some of the popular color types such as Violet and Saphire which originate from a combination of recessive mutations. In the present study, the genomic and mRNA sequences of the melanophilin (MLPH) gene were studied in Violet,...

A novel torenia (Torenia fournieri Lind. ex Fourn.) mutant ‘flecked’, which bears variegated flowers, was obtained from ethyl methanesulfonate-treated M2 plants. The lower lip of this mutant has small violet spots with a pale violet background, while that of the normal type is solid violet. The mutant trait frequently reverted to a semicircular violet sector or solid violet lower lip. Germinal ...

In the underwater environment, the properties of light (intensity and spectrum) change rapidly with depth and water quality. In this article, we have described how and to what extent lighting conditions can influence the development, growth, and survival of zebrafish. Fertilized eggs and the corresponding larvae were exposed to different visible light wavelengths (violet, blue, green, yellow, r...

Sodium azide-crystal violet-agar and a modified blood-azide (MBA)-agar were used to isolate Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae from swine tissues. There was no significant difference in the number of isolations. However, 78% of the isolants from modified blood-azide medium required only 24 hr of incubation, whereas all of the isolants obtained on sodium azide-crystal violet medium required 48 hr.

1. Small dumps of the luminous cells of Mnemiopsis cannot readily be stimulated mechanically but will luminesce on treatment with saponin solution. Larger groups of luminous cells (such as are connected with two paddle plates) luminesce on mechanical stimulation. This suggests that mechanical stimulation to luminesce occurs chiefly through a nerve mechanism which has been broken up in the small...

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new instrument to optimize the size, shape, and centration of anterior capsulorhexis. METHODS The study was divided into two parts. The first part was done in 10 goats' eyes. A specially designed capsulorhexis marker was used. The lower edge of the instrument was stained by gentian violet and then applied to the...
