This paper focuses on annotating physical objects with contextual information from the viewpoints of affordance theory (Gibson 1979) and practical design of “Internet middleware”. Our starting point is the notion that linking user-generated meanings to everyday objects equips physical artifacts with new types of affordances, which we call here as social affordances (Kreijns &Kirschner 2001). Th...
This paper represents theoretical reflections about the effects of affordances in gamification. Affordances, a visual clue to the function of an object, constitute major design elements in gamified applications. We propose a framework to validate the effects on engagement of target groups.
In this article we introduce a usage-goal framework within which task design can be guided and analyzed. We tell a tale of one task, the Pentomino Problem, and its evolution through predictive analysis, trial, reflective analysis, and adjustment. In describing several iterations of the task implementation, we focus on mathematical affordances embedded in the design and also briefly touch upon p...
The question motivating the work presented here, starting from a view of music as embodied and situated activity, is how can we account for the complexity of interactive music performance situations. These are situations in which human performers interact with responsive technologies, such as sensor-driven technology or sound synthesis affected by analysis of the performed sound signal. This re...
Social coordination and affordance perception always take part in concrete situations in real life. Nonetheless, the different fields of ecological psychology studying these phenomena do not seem to make this situated nature an object of study. To integrate both fields and extend the reach of the ecological approach, we introduce the Skilled Intentionality Framework that situates both social co...
In this paper, we examine affordances within the context of representing the functional behaviour of event-based systems. We provide an overview of the ontology that supports such representation. We provide an example use of the affordances that can facilitate us to describe, model, and reason about the behaviour of event-based systems in an intuitive, effective manner.
Robot grasping depends on the specific manipulation scenario: the object, its properties, task and grasp constraints. Object-task affordances facilitate semantic reasoning about pre-grasp configurations with respect to the intended tasks, favouring good grasps. We employ probabilistic rule learning to recover such object-task affordances for task-dependent grasping from realistic video data.
Process modelling – the design and use of graphical documentations of an organisation’s business processes – is a key method to document and use information about business processes. Still, despite current interest in process modelling, this research area faces essential challenges. Key unanswered questions concern the impact of process modelling in organisational practice, and the mechanisms t...
Increasingly, business analytics is seen to provide the possibilities for businesses to effectively support strategic decision-making, thereby to become a source of strategic business value. However, little research exists regarding the mechanism through which business analytics supports strategic decisionmaking and ultimately organisational performance. This paper draws upon literature on IT a...
Levi McNeil, Sookmyung Women’s University Previous research suggests that the affordances (van Lier, 2000) of asynchronous computer-mediated communication (ACMC) environments help reduce foreign language anxiety (FLA). However, FLA is rarely the focus of these studies and research has not adequately addressed the relationship between FLA and the affordances that students use. This study explore...
