We study the class of simple graphs G for which every pair of distinct odd cycles intersect in at most one edge. We give a structural characterization of the graphs in G and prove that every G ∈ G satisfies the list-edge-coloring conjecture. When ∆(G) ≥ 4, we in fact prove a stronger result about kernel-perfect orientations in L(G) which implies that G is (m∆(G) : m)edge-choosable and ∆(G)-edge...
An interval edge t-coloring of a graph G is a proper edge coloring of G with colors 1,2...,t such that at least one edge of G is colored by color i,i=1,2...,t, and the edges incident with each vertex x are colored by d_{G}(x) consecutive colors, where d_{G}(x) is the degree of the vertex x in G. For Mobius ladders the existence of this coloring is proved and all possible numbers of colors in su...
Let F be a family of connected bipartite graphs, each with at least three vertices. A proper vertex colouring of a graph G with no bichromatic subgraph in F is F-free. The F-free chromatic number χ(G,F) of a graph G is the minimum number of colours in an F-free colouring of G. For appropriate choices of F , several well-known types of colourings fit into this framework, including acyclic colour...
Let G = (V,E) be any finite simple graph. A mapping C : E → [k] is called an acyclic edge k-colouring of G, if any two adjacent edges have different colours and there are no bichromatic cycles in G. In other words, for every pair of distinct colours i and j, the subgraph induced by all the edges which have either colour i or j is acyclic. The smallest number k of colours, such that G has an acy...
In the feedback vertex set problem, the aim is to minimize, in a connected graph G = (V ,E), the cardinality of the set V (G)⊆ V , whose removal induces an acyclic subgraph. In this paper, we show an interesting relationship between the minimum feedback vertex set problem and the acyclic coloring problem (which consists in coloring vertices of a graph G such that no two colors induce a cycle in...
Acyclic and star coloring problems are specialized vertex coloring problems that arise in the efficient computation of Hessians using automatic differentiation or finite differencing, when both sparsity and symmetry are exploited. We present an algorithmic paradigm for finding heuristic solutions for these two NP-hard problems. The underlying common technique is the exploitation of the structur...
Let $G=(V(G),E(G))$ be a simple, finite and undirected graph of order $n$. A $k$-vertex weightings of a graph $G$ is a mapping $w: V(G) to {1, ldots, k}$. A $k$-vertex weighting induces an edge labeling $f_w: E(G) to N$ such that $f_w(uv)=w(u)+w(v)$. Such a labeling is called an {it edge-coloring k-vertex weightings} if $f_{w}(e)not= f_{w}(echr(chr(chr('39')39chr('39'))39chr(chr('39')39chr('39'...
