Human airway epithelial cells can increase expression of both lactoferrin and ferritin after exposure to catalytically active metal. These proteins transport and store metal, with coordination sites fully complexed, and therefore can diminish the oxidative stress. The intracellular transport of lactoferrin results in a transfer of complexed metal to ferritin, where it is stored in a less reacti...

Trace elements are vital for the growth and development of all organisms. Little is known about the elemental content and trace metal biology of Red Sea demosponges. This study establishes an initial database of sponge elemental content. It provides the necessary foundation for further research of the mechanisms used by sponges to regulate the uptake, accumulation, and storage of metals. The me...

It happens inside: highly active nanoreactors are prepared by encapsulating dendritic Pt nanoparticles (NPs) grown on a polystyrene template inside hollow porous silica capsules. The catalytic activity of these Pt NPs is preserved after encapsulation and template removal. Different metals, such as Ni, can thus be reduced inside the capsules, thereby leading to the formation of composites with t...

Optically active polymers containing P-stereogenic bisphosphine and 1,2,3-triazole units in the main chain were obtained by copper-catalyzed Huisgen cycloaddition. The repeating unit of the polymer adopted bidentate as well as tetradentate coordination, leading to the change in the conformations of the polymer via complexation with transition metals.

The synthesis and characterization of a novel class of highly-metallized, redox-active polyelectrolytes that employ phosphorus as a scaffold for the installation of transition metals is described. Pyrolysis of thin films of the title polyelectrolytes resulted in the production of magnetite crystallites and ill-defined carbon-, phosphorus- and oxygen-rich phases in char yields of nearly 50%.

Introduction Early transition metals carbides are catalytically active in a variety of reactions, such as isomerization reactions, hydrogenation reactions, water-gas shift (WGS), hydrocarbon steam reforming, etc. [1]. Our group recently developed a method to load metal catalysts onto high surface area carbide and nitride supports, and demonstrated that Pt supported on Mo carbide (Mo2C) possesse...

Due to their immutable nature, metals are a group of pollutants of much concern. As a result of human activities such as mining and smelting of metalliferous ores, electroplating, gas exhaust, energy and fuel production, fertilizer and pesticide application, etc., metal pollution has become one of the most serious environmental problems today. Phytoremediation, an emerging cost-effective, non-i...

The strategies developed by plants to avoid the toxicity of cadmium (Cd) and other heavy metals involve active sequestration of metals into the apoplast and vacuoles. The protein systems excluding heavy metals from the cell cytosol localize to the plasma membrane and tonoplast and are energized either by ATP or by the electrochemical gradient generated by H(+)-ATPase or by V-ATPase and pyrophos...

Detailed studies in the past two decades have shown that redox active metals like iron (Fe), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr), cobalt (Co) and other metals undergo redox cycling reactions and possess the ability to produce reactive radicals such as superoxide anion radical and nitric oxide in biological systems. Disruption of metal ion homeostasis may lead to oxidative stress, a state where increased...

Ductile: Substances that can be drawn into thin wires are called ductile. For example, most of the metals are ductile. Question 2: Why is sodium kept immersed in kerosene oil? Answer: Sodium and potassium are very reactive metals and and combine explosively with air as well as water. Hence, they catch fire if kept in open. Therefore, to prevent accidental fires and accidents, sodium is stored i...
