The Cartwheel, archetypical ring galaxy with strong star formation activity concentrated in a peculiar annular structure, has been imaged with the CHANDRA ACIS-S instrument. We present here preliminary results, that confirm the high luminosity detected earlier with the ROSAT HRI. Many bright isolated sources are visible in the star-forming ring. A diffuse component at luminosity of the order of...

Ultra-luminous X-Ray Objects are off-nucleus point sources with L X = 10 39-10 41 erg/s but the nature of such systems are largely unidentified. Here we report a 2.1 hour period observed in a Chandra ACIS observation for ULX M51 X-7, which is located on the edge of a young star cluster in the star forming region in a spiral arm. In two ACIS observations separated by one year, the ULX changed fr...

We study the properties of hot gaseous halos for 10 nearby ultraluminous IRAS galaxies observed by Chandra using the ACIS instrument. For all sample galaxies, diffuse soft X-ray emissions are found within ∼ 10 kpc of the central region; their spectra are well fit by a MEKAL model plus emission lines from α elements and other ions. The temperature of the hot gas is about 0.7 keV and metallicity ...

We report spectral and variability analysis of two quiescent low mass x-ray binaries (previously identified with ROSAT HRI as X5 and X7) in the globular cluster 47 Tuc, from a Chandra ACIS-I observation. X5 demonstrates sharp eclipses with an 8.666±0.008 hr period, as well as dips showing an increased N H column. Their thermal spectra are well-modelled by unmagnetized hydrogen atmospheres of ho...

Cases of atypical glandular cells (AGC) diagnosed on liquid-based preparations were culled from a 3-year period. When available, residual cellular material was analyzed for human papillomavirus (HPV) by polymerase chain reaction and correlated with cytologic and histologic (biopsy) outcome. Of 178,994 cytologic cases, 187 (0.1045%) contained AGC compared with 8,740 (4.8828%) atypical squamous c...

A 40 ks Chandra ACIS-S observation of the dynamically young cluster A1367 yields new insights on X-ray emission from cluster member galaxies. We detect 59 point-like sources in the ACIS field, of which 8 are identified with known cluster member galaxies. Thus in total 10 member galaxies are detected in X-rays when three galaxies discussed in paper I (Sun & Murray 2002; NGC 3860 is discussed in ...

Autonomous Community Information System (ACIS) is a proposition made to contend with the extreme dynamism in the large-scale information system. ACIS is a decentralized bilateral-hierarchy architecture that forms a community of individual end-users (community members) having the same interests and demands in somewhere, at specified time. It allows the community members to mutually cooperate and...

We present results from the zeroth-order imaging of a Chandra HETGS observation of the nearby Seyfert 2 galaxy Circinus. Twelve X-ray sources were detected in the ACIS-S image of the galaxy, embedded in diffuse X-ray emission. The latter shows a prominent (∼ 18) soft “plume” in the N-W direction, coincident with the [O III] ionization cone. The radial profiles of the brightest X-ray source at v...

We consider a strictly three-dimensional modeling technique as a basis for numerical simulations. Applications range from • a high-resolution indoor air flow modeling using the so-called thermal lattice Boltzmann method, • combined with a multizone network model for the building energy simulation, • to the scope of structural engineering, i.e. a three-dimensional high order solid finite element...

We present results from the observation of the young Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G292.0+1.8 with the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer (ACIS) on board the Chandra X-ray Observatory. In the 0.3 − 8 keV band, the high resolution ACIS images reveal a complex morphology consisting of knots and filaments, as well as the blast wave around the periphery of the SNR. We present equivalent width (EW...
