The physical resources available to access and manipulate the degrees of freedom of a quantum system define the set A of operationally relevant observables. The algebraic structure of A selects a preferred tensor product structure, i.e., a partition into subsystems. The notion of compoundness for quantum systems is accordingly relativized. Universal control over virtual subsystems can be achiev...
Immersion is the subjective impression that one is participating in a comprehensive, realistic experience. Interactive media now enable various degrees of digital immersion. The more a virtual immersive experience is based on design strategies that combine actional, symbolic, and sensory factors, the greater the participant's suspension of disbelief that she or he is "inside" a digitally enhanc...
An unusual four-dimensional generally covariant and supersymmetric SU(2) gauge theory is described. The theory has local degrees of freedom, and is invariant under a local (left-handed) chiral supersymmetry, which is half the supersymmetry of supergravity. The Hamiltonian 3+1 decomposition of the theory reveals the remarkable feature that the local supersymmetry is a consequence of Yang-Mills s...
We consider the full effective theory for quantum gravity at second order in curvature including non-local terms. We show that the theory contains two new degrees of freedom beyond the massless graviton: namely a massive spin-2 ghost and a massive scalar field. Furthermore, we show that it is impossible to fine-tune the parameters of the effective action to eliminate completely the classical sp...
In some cases in which rational and moral agents experience moral uncertainty, they are unable to assign exact degrees of moral value—in a non-arbitrary way—to some of the different acts available to them, and so are unable to choose with certainty the best act. This article presents a new justification for the use of lotteries in this kind of situation. It is argued that sometimes the only rat...
We show that degrees of the real fields of definition of arithmetic Kleinian reflection groups are bounded by 35.
Both the Green-Schwarz and Siegel strings are presented in canonical form. Both systems are shown to describe the same number of physical degrees of freedom. The apparent extra symmetries of the Siegel string are not true symmetries but are combinations of second-class constraints. A formal quantization procedure is outlined and the problems of quantization are discussed.
We present a further argument that typical black holes with field theory duals have firewalls at the horizon. This argument makes no reference to entanglement between the black hole and any distant system, and so is not evaded by identifying degrees of freedom inside the black hole with those outside. We also address the Einstein-Rosen=Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen conjecture of Maldacena and Susskin...
We introduce the notion of a half-ribbon Hopf algebra, which is a Hopf algebra H along with a distinguished element t ∈ H such that (H, R,C) is a ribbon Hopf algebra, where R = (t ⊗ t)∆(t) and C = t. The element t is closely related to the topological ‘half-twist’, which twists a ribbon by 180 degrees. We construct a functor from a topological category of ribbons with half-twists to the categor...
