INTRODUCTION The goal of the reported study was an evaluation of results, obtained in the treatment of knee joints with intraarticular pathologies, concomitant with cysts in the popliteal fossa. We hypothesized that removal of popliteal cyst and associated pathology will provide improvement in function, pain of operated knee and patient satisfaction. MATERIAL AND METHODS There were 10 patient...

BACKGROUND Ligament restraints to terminal knee extension are poorly understood. HYPOTHESES (1) As with other motions of the knee, genu recurvatum is limited primarily by a named, identifiable structure. (2) As the largest static structure of the posterior knee, the oblique popliteal ligament is uniquely suited to act as a checkrein to knee hyperextension. STUDY DESIGN Descriptive laborator...

A man born in 1944 presented with an episode of macroscopic haematuria during a urinary tract infection in 1988. He was unusually tall at 2 metres. An intravenous pyelogram and an abdominal ultrasound disclosed the presence of bilaterally enlarged polycystic kidneys and a polycystic liver. There was a family history of renal disease. Plasma creatinine (180 micro mol/l) and blood pressure (150/1...

Background. A recently described selective tibial nerve block at the popliteal crease presents a viable alternative to sciatic nerve block for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty. In this two-part investigation, we describe the effects of a tibial nerve block at the popliteal crease. Methods. In embalmed cadavers, after the ultrasound-guided dye injection the dissection revealed proxima...

The popliteal angle is a widely used clinical means of assessing hamstring length in cerebral palsy patients. The relevance of the popliteal angle as a measure of hamstring length was assessed in this prospective study. Sixteen patients with cerebral palsy with crouch gait had their conventional and modified popliteal angles measured by nine observers on two separate occasions. With use of the ...

Lymphatic vessels afferent to the popliteal nodes in young adult rats and guinea pigs were interrupted at the lowest edge of the popliteal fossa, and regressive changes in the nodes occurring 4 to 16 or 18 weeks after surgery were re-examined histologically. In the rat, some popliteal nodes were drained by lymphatic channel(s) from the tail. After surgery, the popliteal nodes without lymphatic ...

OBJECTIVES To investigate the immediate effects of intermittent pneumatic foot and calf compression (IPFCC) on popliteal artery blood flow in symptom-free volunteers and to determine the reproducibility of color flow duplex imaging in the popliteal artery. DESIGN Cohort study. SETTING A university associated tertiary care hospital. PATIENTS Forty lower limbs of 30 volunteers without sympt...

Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome is a rare cause of peripheral vascular disease, often affecting young adults. Multiple studies have shown that osteochondromas can cause vascular injury. Intermittent compression, pseudoaneurysm, thrombosis, distal embolism, and venous thrombosis have all been described as possible complications. Here we present a case of popliteal arterial entrapment type I...

A 41-year-old female patient with neurofibromatosis 1 presented with new neurologic deficits secondary to malignant degeneration of a tibial lesion. Ultrasound mapping of the popliteal nerve revealed changes consistent with an intraneural neurofibroma. Successful popliteal nerve blockade was achieved under ultrasound guidance.
