The stimulation of ethylene production from seedling tissue of Phascolus vulgaris, Helianthus annuus and Zea mays by growth regulators was inhibited by actinomycin D and puromycin and to a lesser extent by 2-thiouracil and p-fluorophenylalanine. It is concluded that the mechanism of action of growth regulators on the enhancement of ethylene production is the formation of enzymes involved in eth...
Dickeya zeae is an emerging rice (Oryza sativa) pathogen causing bacterial foot rot. Related pathogens affect maize (Zea mays) and potato (Solanum tuberosum) and a variety of important ornamental and floral plants. Here, we present the draft genome sequence of D. zeae DZ2Q, an isolate obtained from rice grown in Italy.
With the exception of barley and rice, little is known about the existence of hemoglobins (Hbs) in cereals. This work reports the cloning and analysis of hb genes from maize (Zea mays ssp. mays) and teosinte (Zea mays ssp. parviglumis). Coding sequences of maize and teosinte hb genes (hbm and hbt, respectively) are highly similar to each other and are interrupted by three introns located at ide...
Teosinte (Zea mays ssp. parviglumis) is the wild ancestor of modern maize (Zea mays ssp. mays). Teosinte contains greater genetic diversity compared with maize inbreds and landraces, but its use is limited by insufficient genetic resources to evaluate its value. A population of teosinte near isogenic lines (NILs) was previously developed to broaden the resources for genetic diversity of maize, ...
BACKGROUND AND AIMS Nicaraguan teosinte (Zea nicaraguensis), a species found in frequently flooded areas, provides useful germplasm for breeding flooding-tolerant maize (Z. mays subsp. mays). The objective of this study was to select flooding-tolerant lines using a library of introgression lines (ILs), each containing a chromosome segment from Z. nicaraguensis in the maize inbred line Mi29. M...
In this research, several chemical extractants and modified Olsen methods were studied in 25 surface-calcareous soils (0-30 cm) for determining available phosphorus (P) for corn (Zea mays L.) plant. In this experiment, the highest correlation was obtained between extracted P by Olsen and Colwell methods (NaHCO3-extractable P) and dry weight of corn shoot (r =0.67 and 0.75, p
The starch-granule-bound starch synthase from Zea mays has been solubilized with a recovery of between 50 and 84%. Chromatography of the solubilized enzyme on DEAE-Sepharose resolves two fractions of activity which may be distinguished by their response to citrate. Neither solubilized isoenzyme displays any significant activity with UDPglucose.
A nonaqueous fractionation method to obtain highly purified mesophyll chloroplasts from lyophilized leaves of Zea mays L. is described. The levels of several metabolites including pyruvate were determined in the purified mesophyll chloroplast fractions which were prepared from leaves exposed to different light intensities. The role of pyruvate in the regulation of pyruvate,Pi dikinase in these ...
The electrical potentials across the cell membranes of the lower parts of Zea mays coleoptile cells are about 2 millivolts more negative than across the upper parts. This electrical polarization with respect to gravity occurs when coleoptiles are oriented with their apical ends either up or down and seems independent of the magnitude of the potential when the potential is modified by other trea...
Zea mays chloroplast DNA-dependent RNA polymerase in vitro preferentially transcribes maize chloroplast DNA sequences incorporated in cloned chimeric bacterial plasmids. Preferential transcription is dependent on the presence of a 27.5-kilodalton polypeptide, the S factor, which has been purified from maize chloroplasts, and also on the template's being in the supercoiled form.
