wood-cutting performance of a 1 kW ytterbium fibre laser-a recent, compact, flexible, efficient laser system. The cutting process is characterized, taking as a reference the effects of the principal process factors. A quantification of energy consumption during the cutting process, critical for scale-up, is provided.

A high-average power, laser-diode-pumped, picosecond-pulse regenerative chirped pulse amplifier was developed by using the thin-rod Yb:YAG laser architecture. An average output power of 20 W was achieved at a repetition rate of 100 kHz with an output pulse width of 2 ps. 2008 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: (140.3280) Lasers, amplifiers, (140.3615) Lasers, ytterbium, (140.3480) Lasers, ...

Among 265 methicillin-susceptible and -resistant staphylococci, CB-181963 (CAB-175) had a 50% minimum inhibitory concentration of 2 microg/ml and a 90% minimum inhibitory concentration of 4 microg/ml. All strains except two vancomycin-resistant S. aureus and 5 vancomycin-intermediate S. aureus strains were also susceptible to vancomycin and teicoplanin, and all were susceptible to linezolid, ra...

Evaporative cooling was performed to cool fermionic 173Yb atoms in a crossed optical dipole trap. The large elastic collision rate leads to efficient evaporation and we have successfully cooled the atoms to 0.37+/-0.06 of the Fermi temperature, that is to say, to a quantum degenerate regime. In this regime, a plunge of evaporation efficiency was observed as a result of Fermi degeneracy.

A 10.5 Tbit/s optical transmission (15 x 100 Gbit/s QPSK channels per core) over 2,520 km of multicore fiber is achieved using an integrated multicore transmission link consisting of directly spliced multicore components such as fan-in/fanout fiber couplers, a 60 km trench-assisted 7-core hexagonal fiber and cladding-pumped erbium-ytterbium-doped fiber amplifiers.

We report on a linearly-polarized, continuous-wave Ytterbium-doped fiber laser continuously tunable on the fly over an unprecedented emission bandwidth ranging from 976 nm to 1120 nm and delivering a minimum of 10 W and a maximum of 41 W. Additionally, the bandwidth of the system can be tuned from 100 pm to more than 1 nm at all wavelengths.

Passive mode locking of the ytterbium doped orthovanadate crystal Yb:LuVO(4) is reported for the first time. We demonstrate what we believe to be the shortest pulses directly generated with an Yb-doped crystalline laser using a semiconductor saturable absorber. The pulses at 1036 nm have a duration as short as 58 fs for an average power of 85 mW.
