We report the generation of sub-picosecond modelocked pulses from an ultrafast laser inscribed Er-doped waveguide laser. 320 fs pulses at a repetition rate of 40 MHz and energy of 31 pJ were facilitated via passive modelocking by a carbon nanotube saturable absorber. We demonstrate microfluidic laser intra-cavity absorption spectroscopy with mid-infrared lambda approximately 9mum quantum cascade lasers. A deepetched narrow ridge waveguide laser is placed in a microfluidic chamber. The evanescent tails of the laser mode penetrate into a liquid on both sides of the ridge. The absorption lines of the liquid modify the laser waveguide loss, resulting in signifi...

We report the demonstration of a near-diffraction-limited, compact, diode-end-pumped double-clad planar waveguide Nd:YAG laser. Efficient laser operation was achieved for the three dominant Nd(3+) transitions, at 1.064, 0.946, and 1.32microm , with TE polarized output powers of 1.33, 0.57, and 0.33 W for the available output couplers. The output beam from the monolithic plane-plane laser cavity...

ftr-raman spectra of human dental enamel, both laser-irradiated and untreated, are reported. spectra are compared with hydroxyapatite. it is evident that unlike the co2 laser, the nd/yag laser does not induce any chemical change in dental enamel.

1 Neptune Laboratory, Departments of Electrical Engineering and Physics, University of California, Los Angeles, CA 90095, U.S.A. 2 STI Optronics, Inc., Bellevue, WA 98004-1495, USA Abstract. IFEL and FEL techniques can be used to modulate an electron beam on the scale of the radiation wavelength. However, the lack of a high power radiation source in the 100-300 μm range hinders the progress on ...

The lack of a high-power, relatively low-cost and compact terahertz (THz) source in the range 0.3-3x10 Hz is the major obstacle in progressing on biomedical and material studies at these wavelengths. A high-gain, single pass seeded FEL technique allows to obtain high power THz pulses of a high spectral brightness. We describe an ongoing project at the Neptune laboratory where a ~ 1kW seed pulse...

introduction: mucous retention cysts are a subtype of intracordal vocal cysts that may occur spontaneously or may be associated with poor vocal hygiene, and which require optimal treatment. the objective of this study was to present a new laser-assisted microsurgery technique for treating intracordal mucous retention cysts and to describe the final outcomes.   materials and methods: in this pro...

To obtain the maximum output power of a fast-axial-flow CW-CO2 laser, gas flow velocity can be optimized by using genetic algorithms. Our theoretical approach shows that the gas flow velocity after optimization increases the laser output power substantially from 500W, obtained in our present system, to 2203W.

Fabrication, characterization, and laser performance of an Yb:Lu₂O₃ planar waveguide laser are reported. Pulsed laser deposition was employed to grow an 8 µm-thick Yb-doped lutetia waveguide on a YAG substrate. X-ray diffraction was used to determine the crystallinity, and spectroscopic characterization showed the absorption and emission cross-sections were indistinguishable from those reported...
