Background: The knowledge of oral health effects caused by long-term medication in medically compromised children is sparse. Besides the effects on salivary secretion, pharmacotherapy may also act directly on the dental hard tissues, with dental caries and/or erosive lesions as possible outcomes of their acid and fermentable sugar content. Methods: Thirteen pharmaceutical preparations commonly ...

Herein, we report the phase inversion of ionomer-stabilized emulsions to form high internal phase emulsions (HIPEs) induced by salt concentration and pH changes. The ionomers are sulfonated polystyrenes (SPSs) with different sulfonation degrees. The emulsion types were determined by conductivity measurements, confocal microscopy and optical microscopy, and the formation of HIPE organogels was v...

Copper-silver (Cu-Ag) ionization has effectively controlled Legionella spp. in the hot water systems of numerous hospitals. However, it was ineffective at controlling Legionella in one Ohio hospital despite the confirmation of adequate total concentrations of copper and silver ions. The pH of the water at this hospital was found to be 8.5 to 9.0. The purpose of this study was to investigate the...

The inner egg capsule of embryos of the yellow-spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum) are routinely colonized by green algae, such as Oophila amblystomatis, that supply O(2) in the presence of light and may consume nitrogenous wastes, forming what has been proposed to be a mutualistic relationship. Given that A. maculatum have been reported to breed in acidic (pH <5.0) and neutral lakes, we h...

The objective of this work was to investigate the retention mechanisms of ammonium in aqueous solution by using progressively oxidized maple wood biochar at different pH values. Hydrogen peroxide was used to oxidize the biochar to pH values ranging from 8.1 to 3.7, with one set being adjusted to a pH of 7 afterwards. Oxidizing the biochars at their lowered pH did not increase their ability to a...

Toxic water obtained from E. V. Spence Reservoir during an ongoing Prymnesium parvum-related fish kill was used to evaluate the effect of lower pH levels on P. parvum cell integrity and toxicity. Hydrochloric and sulfuric acids were used separately to lower pH in toxic water to see if the P. parvum cells and ichthyotoxin would be destroyed or deactivated. The treatments ranged from pH 5.5 to pH...

Ligand H4bedik was reacted with MnCl2·4H2O at pH ∼ 6.5 to give a highly water-soluble and water-coordinated Mn(ii) complex (). The complex was found to show r1 = 3.11 mM(-1) s(-1) per Mn(ii) at 1.4 T and 6.26 mM(-1) s(-1) per Mn(ii) at 14.1 T at 25 °C, pH = 7.4. In addition to r1, the r2 at 14.1 T was found to be 132.78 mM(-1) s(-1) per Mn(ii) at 25 °C, pH = 7.4.

In Taiwan, the turbidity of raw water for fresh water treatments can sometimes reach as high as 40000 NTU due to intensive rainfall, especially in typhoon seasons. In response, water works often apply large quantities of coagulants such as polyaluminium chloride (PACl). In this study, simulated and natural highly turbid water was coagulated with two PACls, a commercial product (PACl-1) and a la...

This thesis presents temporal perspectives of lake acidification in Sweden. Sediment records have been used to study timing, trends and causes of acidification, and two different techniques for assessing past lake-water acidity are presented. A new technique for pH prediction, based on near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy of surface sediments, is developed. This study shows that there is a pH relat...
