BACKGROUND Volar locking plates provide significant structural stability to the distal radius. Failure of a volar locked plating is a rarely reported complication in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION A 40 year-old, obese female patient who presented with a displaced extraarticular distal radius fracture, underwent open reduction and internal fixation of the fracture using a volar locking plat...

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE In recent years several different plate designs for internal fixation of fractures of the distal radius have been developed. However, few biomechanical studies have been performed to compare these new implants. The purpose of this study was to compare the mechanical properties of 5 different commercially available plates (3 volar and 2 dorsal) with standard K-wire fixatio...

Proximal interphalangeal joint injuries are common and often can be treated nonsurgically. Some dorsal fracture-dislocations, however, require special attention or surgical management to optimize outcomes. Treatment options for dorsal proximal interphalangeal fracture-dislocations include splinting, percutaneous pinning, fracture fixation, external fixation devices, volar plate arthroplasty, an...

The anatomy of the first metatarso-phalangeal joint and of dorsal dislocation of the phalanx are described. As similar lesions in the hand, closed reduction is impossible because of interposition of the volar plate. Open reduction is essential and should be performed as soon as possible after the injury.

Proximal interphalangeal joint dislocations are injuries observed frequently and caused by axial loading on the finger in the extension. In this paper we present a traumatic open finger dislocation due to a ball hitting a wrestler. It was successfully treated with reduction and the volar plate and collateral bond fixation were applied with absorbable sutures.

BACKGROUND Distal radius fracture is a common injury with a variety of operative and non-operative management options. There remains debate as to the optimal treatment for a given patient and fracture. Despite the popularity of volar locking plate fixation, there are few large cohort or long term follow up studies to justify this modality. Our aim was to report the functional outcome of a large...

Recurrent dislocation is not common in small joints. This report presents a recurrent dislocation of the proximal interphalangeal joint of the ring finger in a 23-years-old man. Recurrent dislocation was addressed successfully by repairing the avulsed volar plate to the base of the middle phalanx, followed by 6 weeks of splint immobilization.

Two cases of posttraumatic irreducible compound dislocation of the interphalangeal joint of the thumb are presented. This rare injury requires surgical intervention with anatomic repositioning of the structures responsible for the irreducibility viz. the long Flexor tendon and the volar plate.

The authors present an case of a thumb metacarpophalangeal joint dislocation which was made complicated by the interposition of the sesamoid bone which required open reduction. The intact volar plate prevented closed reduction. The anatomy and surgical management of this unusual case is described.

OBJECTIVE To assess the outcome of volarlocking compression plate fixation for intra-articular distal radius fractures with respect to function of hand and roentgenographic parameters. METHODS The retrospective study was conducted at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Karachi, and comprised patients who underwent locking compression plate fixation for intra-articular distal radius fractures be...
