JC virus (JCV) load was determined by using quantitative polymerase chain reaction in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of 12 patients with AIDS-associated progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) and compared with clinical outcome. JCV loads varied widely (3-7 log10 JCV equivalents/mL of CSF) and were apparently not related to absolute CD4 cell counts or CSF and plasma human immunodeficiency v...
Using the force sensor of an atomic force microscope, motor forces of the human immunodeficiency virus-1 reverse transcriptase were measured during active replication of a short DNA transcript. At low load forces the polymerase is mechanically slowed, whereas at high force (approximately 15 piconewton) it stalls. From recordings of estimated polymerase turnover velocity versus load force, an ap...
Background: Despite the considerable advances in acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) treatment and management, finding the cure for this disease has been hindered by emerging challenges such as virus resistance and treatment failures. The purpose of this study is to compare the cytokine profiles of patients with successful treatment and patients with unsuccessful treatment to gain a bette...
The use of gold nanoparticle as an anti-infective agent has been proposed for years[1]. However, many reports mention for its ability counteracting bacteria. Its property against virus has never been systematically evaluated. Here, the authors performed a preliminary in vitro study to assess the effect of gold nanoparticle on viral load of hepatitis C virus (HCV). The standard gold nanoparticle...
BACKGROUND Among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected men who have sex with men (MSM) taking combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), the impact of rectal sexually transmitted infections (STIs) on rectal HIV-1 shedding is unknown. METHODS Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) RNA was quantified from rectal swabs collected for Neisseria gonorrhoeae (GC) and Chlamydia trachomatis...
Pediatric solid organ transplant recipients are at risk for Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-driven lymphoproliferative disease. The expression of 5 sentinel EBV genes (EBNA1, EBNA2a, LMP1, LMP2a, and ZEBRA) was examined in solid organ transplant recipients who developed persistent virus loads in their peripheral blood lymphocytes after transplantation. Two distinct groups were identified. LMP2a gene e...
INTRODUCTION Rapid scale-up of antiretroviral therapy rollout in Sub-Saharan African countries faces the challenge of virological failure. This could be the consequence of transmitted drug-resistant human immunodeficiency virus strains at the population level. While a pre-antiretroviral therapy genotypic test has been a major component of the human immunodeficiency virus management programme in...
We collected venous and capillary serum samples from 21 Zika virus‒infected patients on multiple days after symptom onset and found RNA load was higher and median duration of virus detection significantly longer in capillary than in venous blood. These findings raise questions about the role of the capillary compartment in virus transmission dynamics.
