BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE To describe a new surgical technique for intraoperative placement of Eye Physics (EP) plaques for uveal melanoma using a toric marker. PATIENTS AND METHODS A toric marker is designed for cataract surgery to align the axis of astigmatism; its use was modified in this protocol to mark the axis of suture coordinates as calculated by Plaque Simulator (PS) software. RESU...

Toric spaces being non-simply connected, it is possible to find in such spaces some loops which are not homotopic to a point: we call them toric loops. Some applications, such as the study of the relationship between the geometrical characteristics of a material and its physical properties, rely on three-dimensional discrete toric spaces and require detecting objects having a toric loop. In thi...

Extending the notion of indispensable binomials of a toric ideal ((14), (7)), we define indispensable monomials of a toric ideal and establish some of their properties. They are useful for searching indispensable binomials of a toric ideal and for proving the existence or non-existence of a unique minimal system of binomials generators of a toric ideal. Some examples of indispensable monomials ...

JULY 2014 CATARACT & REFRACTIVE SURGERY TODAY 55 M any techniques have been described for correcting aphakia with inadequate capsular support. The most common IOLs that are used include anterior chamber, posterior chamber, iris-fixated, and scleral-sutured IOLs; however, there is no current agreement on the ideal technique or technology. The Artisan aphakia lens (Ophtec; marketed as the Verisys...

PURPOSE We report the postoperative results of the Artisan Hyperopia phakic intraocular lens (IOL; model 203W; Ophtec, Groningen, The Netherlands). DESIGN Prospective, nonrandomized trial. PARTICIPANTS Twenty-six eyes of 13 self-selected patients with refractive error ranging from +3.00 to +11.00 diopters (D). INTERVENTION Patients with hypermetropia were implanted with the Artisan Hypero...

PURPOSE To evaluate the postoperative intraocular positional stability of 1 rigid poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) phakic intraocular lens (pIOL) model and 2 foldable polysilicone-PMMA iris-fixated pIOL models. SETTING Department of Ophthalmology, Johann Wolfgang Goethe-University Frankfurt am Main, Germany. METHODS One of 3 iris-fixated pIOL models (Artisan, Artiflex I, and Artiflex II, Op...

According to Lerman, compact connected toric contact 3-manifolds with a non-free toric action whose moment cone spans an angle greater than π are overtwisted, thus non-fillable. In contrast, we show that all compact connected toric contact manifolds in dimension greater than three are weakly symplectically fillable and most of them are strongly symplectically fillable. The proof is based on the...

A toric polyhedron is a reduced closed subscheme of a toric variety that are partial unions of the orbits of the torus action. We prove vanishing theorems for toric polyhedra. We also give a proof of the E1-degeneration of Hodge to de Rham type spectral sequence for toric polyhedra in any characteristic. Finally, we give a very powerful extension theorem for ample line bundles.

Generalizing cones over projective toric varieties, we present arbitrary toric varieties as quotients of quasiaffine toric varieties. Such quotient presentations correspond to groups of Weil divisors generating the topology. Groups comprising Cartier divisors define free quotients, whereas Q-Cartier divisors define geometric quotients. Each quotient presentation yields homogeneous coordinates. ...
