We describe a rare case of a giant thymoma that developed in the right thoracic cavity, and seemed to originate from the visceral pleura. We believe that there have been few reports of thymoma developing from such an unusual origin.
CONTEXT The cytologic features of carcinoid tumor in mediastinal fine-needle aspiration are well described. Nevertheless, this tumor may be difficult to distinguish from thymoma in this site. OBJECTIVE We sought to correlate the cytologic features of carcinoid tumor of the mediastinum in the College of American Pathologists Interlaboratory Comparison Program in Nongynecologic Cytopathology wi...
OBJECTIVE A few thymoma patients without myasthenia gravis (MG) have been observed to develop MG after total removal of the thymoma (postoperative MG). However, the cause of this is not yet known because of the rarity of postoperative MG patients. This study evaluated the clinical characteristics of the 8 postoperative MG patients. METHODS We compiled 1089 thymoma patients treated between 199...
BACKGROUND About 50% of patients with thymoma have paraneoplastic myasthenia gravis (MG). Myositis and myocarditis or neuromyotonia (NMT) will also develop in some. Patients with thymoma-associated MG produce autoantibodies to a variety of neuromuscular antigens, particularly acetylcholine receptor (AChR), titin, skeletal muscle calcium release channel (ryanodine receptor [RyR]), and voltage-ga...
BACKGROUND To determine the relationship between FOXN1 (a transcription factor) and B cell-attracting chemokine 1 (BCA1, a chemotactic factor), and their influence on thymoma cell proliferation. METHODS We initially used immunohistochemical methods to compare the expression levels of FOXN1 and BCA1 in thymoma and non-thymomatous tissue samples. Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction ...
Objective. To assess the presence of specific markers in patients with thymus-independent and thymus-dependent myasthenia gravis for choosing treatment tactics. Methods. The was assessed 138 (M - without thymus changes) (MH hyperplasia, MT thymoma). method ELISA (the content antibodies to subunits 1 7 nAChR blood serum, subunit thymocyte mitochondria, a detectablelevel antinuclear antibody(ANA)...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE The World Health Organization (WHO) has classified thymic carcinoma and other thymomas (types A, AB, and B) as different neoplasms. Myasthenia gravis (MG) is an early sign of thymoma and theoretically does not accompany thymic carcinoma; however, cases of thymic carcinoma with MG have been reported. Whether thymic carcinoma can accompany MG has yet to be established. ME...
Thymomas are relatively common tumors of the anterior superior mediastinum. They are usually relatively slowly growing tumors and their prognosis depends on the macroscopic and microscopic invasion of surrounding tissues. Surgery is the mainstay treatment of thymomas, and complete resection represents one of the most important prognostic factors in this disease. Other important prognostic indic...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Myasthenia gravis (MG) is usually comorbid with thymoma. More accurate estimates of the incidence thymoma in MG will help inform patients and their physicians, facilitate health policy discussions, provide etiologic clues, and optimize the management of MG. METHODS We conducted a systematic review search of relevant English-language studies published between 1960 and 20...
