The main goal of this work is to optimize the emissivity of terahertz (THz) thermal sensors by deposition of a carbon thin film. Previously, these thermal sensors were designed to detect THz radiation utilizing metamaterials in a complicated optical probing scheme. We have repurposed them to absorb terahertz radiation, convert the radiation to heat, and convey that surface temperature as an inf...
Tight junctions in the lens epithelia of human and frog: freeze-fracture and protein tracer studies.
For the first time, the existence of zonulae occludentes in the lens epithelia of human and frog has been demonstrated, using a "double mounting" method in freeze-fracture transmission electron microscope (TEM). The physiologic barrier function of zonulae occludentes in frog lens epithelium is determined by a "wash out" procedure in the protein tracer studies. It was found that within various t...
In the exposure process of photolithography, a free-form lens is designed and fabricated for UV-LED (Ultraviolet Light-Emitting Diode). Thin film metallic glasses (TFMG) are adopted as UV reflection layers to enhance the irradiance and uniformity. The Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) with high transmittance is used as the lens material. The 3-D fast printing is attempted to make the mold of the lens...
A miniature optical spectrometer with a thin-film planar waveguide grating coupler in combination with a miniature plano-convex focusing lens has been investigated. With optical part of the spectrometer as small as 0.2 cubic cm, the spectral resolution varies from 0.3 nm to 4.6 nm within the wavelength range 488.0 nm - 632.8 nm.
We present the first experimental demonstration, to the best of our knowledge, of ghost imaging realized with intense beams generated by a parametric downconversion interaction seeded with pseudothermal light. As expected, the real image of the object is reconstructed satisfying the thin-lens equation. We show that the experimental visibility of the reconstructed image is in accordance with the...
The effect of currents of mass on bending of light rays is considered in the weak field regime. Following Fermat’s principle and the standard theory of gravitational lensing, we derive the gravito-magnetic correction to time delay function and deflection angle caused by a geometrically-thin lens. The cases of both rotating and shifting deflectors are discussed.
In an attempt to relate the laser-engineered net shaping (LENS) process parameters, laser power and laser travel speed, to the quality of LENS-produced parts, strain measurements were taken at several predetermined points within seven LENS AISI 410 thin plates using the neutron diffraction method. The residual stresses at these points were then calculated using the measured strain values to asc...
Selective laser sintering enables the facile production of metal nanoparticle-based conductive layers on flexible substrates, but its application towards large-area electronics has remained questionable due to the limited throughput of the laser process that originates from the direct writing nature. In this study, modified optical schemes are introduced for the fabrication of (1) a densely pat...
Light-scattering intensities in the I11 and I+ mode were obtained on thin sections of three human lenses. Random density and orientation fluctuation theory, without cross correlation, was employed to evaluate light-scattering parameters. Both the density correlation distances, as well as the orientation correlation distances, were related to structural elements in the lens fiber cell that have ...
We have quantitatively established a fundamental limitation on the ultimate spatial resolution of the perfect lens (thin metal slab) in the near field. This limitation stems from the spatial dispersion of the dielectric response of the Fermi liquid of electrons with Coulomb interaction in the metal. We discuss possible applications in nanoimaging, nanophotolithography, and nanospectroscopy.
