A plasmid-encoded class II transposon element was identified in a carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas putida isolate. Tn1332, closely related to Tn1331, harbored the metallo-beta-lactamase gene bla(VIM-2) in addition to four other antibiotic resistance genes, aacA4, aadA1, bla(OXA-9), and bla(TEM-1), and two novel insertion sequences, ISPpu17 and ISPpu18.
A transferable plasmid encoding SHV-12 extended-spectrum beta-lactamase, TEM-116, and aminoglycoside resistance was responsible for two sequential clonal outbreaks of Enterobacter cloacae and Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria. A similar plasmid was present among isolates of four different bacterial species. Recognition of plasmid transfer is crucial for control of outbreaks of multidrug-resistan...
Two Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium strains from different clonal origins, both producing an extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (TEM-52), were isolated from a patient. This enzyme was encoded on a single plasmid and was found at very low levels in one strain, while being encoded on multiple plasmids and in multiple different EcoRI fragments in the other strain.
Identical beta-lactamase-encoding (TEM-1) plasmids were found in two different clinical Neisseria meningitidis strains. They were completely sequenced (5,597 bp) and designated pAB6. The plasmid is almost identical to Neisseria gonorrhoeae plasmid pJD5 (5,599 kb) and may have been picked up from a gonococcus in vivo.
A clinical isolate of Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found to produce a clavulanic acid-inhibited extended-spectrum beta-lactamase with a pI of 6.4. PCR, cloning, and sequencing experiments showed that the corresponding bla(TEM-21) gene was part of a chromosomally located Tn801 transposon disrupted by an IS6100 element and adjacent to an aac(3)-II gene.
Salmonella enterica serovar Newport MDR-AmpC expressing TEM-1b and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase SHV-12 was isolated from affected animals during an outbreak of salmonellosis that led to a 3-month closure of one of the largest equine hospitals in the United States.
We performed an investigation of the pH-dependent quenching of the fluorescence of tryptophan residues of TEM-1 beta-lactamase from E. coli by uncharged and charged quenchers. pH-dependent Stern-Volmer constants (Ksv/pH) of tryptophan residues allowed us to determine subtle but discrete structurally and functionally important processes.
A number of ampicillin-resistant strains of Haemophilus influenzae could donate a gene specifying the type IIIa (TEM) beta-lactamase to Haemophilus parainfluenzae, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Donor strains rapidly lost their ability to transfer ampicillin resistance on storage or subculture. Such strains also apparently contained a single species of covalently closed circular ...
In the last decades, Extended-Spectrum-β-Lactamases (ESBLs) in gram negative bacilli have appeared as a significant mechanism of resistance to antibiotics. Although resistance to carbapenems is increasing among bacteria, they are still the treatment of choice for serious infections caused by ESBL producers. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of ß-lacta...
Background & Aims: One of the most common causes of bacterial resistance to beta-lactam antibiotics is beta-lactamase producing. The aim of this study was to compare the antibiotic resistance of urinary Escherichia coli (E. coli) isolates producing CTX-M and TEM type beta-lactamases, and to determine the strains with co-resistance to multiple antibiotics in Mashhad, Iran. Methods: E. coli b...
