OBJECTIVE To review possible peculiarities in biological mechanisms related to responses of thermoregulatory and specific sweat glands in exercise performed by children in hot environments. DATA SOURCES Review of 47 articles published between 1960 and 2011 in the electronic databases MedLine and SciELO Brazil using the following key-words: 'children', 'heat', 'sweating', 'thermoregulation', '...

Effects of local skin temperature on sweat gland activity were analyzed quantitatively by measuring changes in the rates of thermal sweating and of drug-induced sweating by local heating. The data indicates that a rise in local temperature causes an accelerated increase in the rate of sweat production, the Q10 being around 2.5 regardless of the basal sweat rate with some individual variations. ...

BACKGROUND Eccrine carcinoma is a quite rare malignant tumor that typically arises from a normal sweat gland and that features a rather high recurrence rate subsequent to simple excision. Given its rather poor response to adjuvant therapy, wide excision of the lesion with tumor-free margins may offer a reasonable chance for long-term control of this neoplasm. CASE PRESENTATION Herein, we repo...

Syringocystadenoma papilliferum and tubular apocrine adenoma are rare benign sweat gland tumors. Syringocystadenoma papilliferum occurs alone or in association with other tumors. Although it is rare, the association of tubular apocrine adenoma with syringocystadenoma papilliferum developing in a sebaceous nevus on the scalp is well documented. However, the co-existence of these two tumors witho...

Spiradenoma & cylindroma are relatively uncommon sweat gland tumors. These lesions along with trichoepithelioma can co-exist and this gives support to the theory that they are part of the same spectrum and have a similar derivation. They can occur as separate lesions or within a single tumor mass as collision tumors. Here we report a case of a 67 year old female who presented with multiple papulo...

BACKGROUND First described in 1872, syringomas are common intraepidermal sweat gland tumors most often found in women during adolescence. Frequent involvement areas are the lower eyelids and malar areas; vulvar involvement is relatively rare. These lesions often appear as small, separate, yellowish papules of about 1-3 mm in size and are generally associated with increased vulvar discomfort and...

Introduction: Natural killer (NK) cells, of which CD56 is a specific marker, play an important role in host defense against tumors. Cancer stem cells, of which aldehyde dehydrogenase isoform 1 (ALDH1) is an immunohistochemical marker, are a group of tumorigenic cells which are involved in migration and tumor recurrences. We aimed to evaluate the expression of ALDH1 and CD56 in common salivary g...
