A 14-year-old boy had progressive weakness and ataxia since two years of age with tightly curled hair, facial diplegia, distal weakness and hypaesthesia, cerebellar syndrome and normal intelligence. He also had distal renal tubular acidosis manifested by metabolic acidosis. Sural nerve ultrastructure showed numerous giant axons packed with neurofilaments. The neurofilament major proteins of 68 ...
Chronic idiopathic axonal polyneuropathy (CIAP) is a slowly progressive predominantly sensory axonal polyneuropathy. The prevalence of CIAP increases with age. The pathogenic cause of CIAP is unknown although there are several prevailing etiological hypotheses. In this mini review, we focus on the hypothesis of disturbed microcirculation in the vasa nervorum of peripheral nerves as a pathogenic...
BACKGROUND Nerve conduction studies are an invaluable aid to investigate and quantify the physiological activity of peripheral nerves. These include measurement of sensory and motor conduction velocities and latencies of peripheral nerves. These nerve conduction parameters may be affected by anthropometric factors like age, sex, height, weight and BMI. In this observational study the impact of ...
Lymphatics were detected in the epineurium of the human sural nerve by D-240 immunostaining and confirmed by ultrastructural examination.
INTRODUCTION New tests for improved diagnosis of diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) are useful. MATERIAL AND METHODS We evaluated the utility of automated nerve conduction study (NCS) of the sural nerve with a new portable device for the diagnosis of DPN in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). This study included 114 T2DM patients (58 men) with mean age 64.60 ±8.61 years. Exclusio...
OBJECTIVE To understand various morphologic types and locations of the sural nerve (SN) that are important for nerve conduction studies or nerve grafting procedures. The aim of this study was to describe the course and variations of the SN based on ultrasonographic findings for an adequate nerve conduction study. METHODS A total of 112 SNs in 56 volunteers with no history of trauma or surgery...
Comprehensive electrophysiological studies were performed on 13 patients with arsenic neuropathy. The most prominent finding was a marked abnormality in sensory nerve conduction in the presence of moderate abnormalities in motor nerve conduction. The motor nerve conduction studies and needle EMG were typical of those seen in axonal degeneration which was confirmed by sural nerve biopsy.
