Supracondylar fractures of humerus are the most common fractures in children. The management of severely displaced, unstable fractures of the humerus in children continues to be controversial. We undertook a retrospective study of 48 children with displaced supracondylar fractures (8 were treated with plaster and 40 with cross percutaneous Kirschner wire pinning). Only three children were treat...
A retrospective study of 34 patients with supracondylar-condylar fractures of the femur admitted to the Alexandra Hospital, Singapore, from January 1979 to December 1983 was carried out. These fractures were surgically treated by AO principles and fixation, and the surgery performed mainly by the two authors. Using strict criteria adopted from Schatzker of Toronto, 1 it was found that 62% of pa...
OBJECTIVE To determine clinical characteristics of and outcome in Thoroughbred racehorses with tibial or humeral stress fractures. DESIGN Retrospective study. ANIMALS 99 Thoroughbreds with tibial or humeral stress fractures. PROCEDURE Information obtained from the medical records included history, signalment, and clinical, radiographic, and scintigraphic findings. Outcome was determined b...
BACKGROUND Being one of the most frequent elbow fractures during childhood, supracondylar humerus fractures require rapid diagnosis and treatment, as they may be associated with significant neurovascular and functional problems. QUESTIONS AND PURPOSES: To evaluate demographic and clinical features, and treatment outcomes of the patients with supracondylar humerus fractures who underwent open re...
BACKGROUND Several studies have examined the biomechanical stability of smooth wire fixation constructs used to stabilize pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures. An analysis of varying pin size, number, and lateral starting points has not been performed previously. METHODS Twenty synthetic humeri were sectioned in the midolecranon fossa to simulate a supracondylar humerus fracture. Specime...
Twenty patients who had been treated with Ilizarov external fixation for a Gustilo grade IIIB supracondylar fracture of the femur were functionally assessed 12 to 52 months after treatment. Fourteen fractures were type C3 and 6 were type C2 according to the AO classification. Fractures were united at an average of 39 +/- 9 weeks. There was a final knee extension deficit of 5 degrees to 10 degre...
The supracondylar humerus fracture (SCHF) in children is common and can be complicated with nerve injury either primarily immediate post-trauma or secondarily posttreatment. The concept of neurapraxic nerve injury makes most surgeons choose to 'watch and see' the nerve recovery before deciding second surgery if the nerve does not recover. We report three cases of nerve injury in SCHF, all of wh...
BACKGROUND Supracondylar fractures of the humerus are the most common type of elbow fracture in children. Of all complications associated with supracondylar fractures, nerve injury ranks highest, although reports of the incidence of specific neurapraxia vary. This meta-analysis aims primarily to determine the risk of traumatic neurapraxia in extension-type supracondylar fractures as compared wi...
We discuss the role of primary knee arthroplasty in supracondylar and intercondylar fractures of the femur in elderly patients with reference to 13 cases. This method of treatment is shown to be effective and to have good results. It is recommended for all type C and some type A supracondylar fractures in old people.
