An efficient procedure for preparing enantiopure polycyclic ethers is reported. The protocol is based on the photo-oxidation/conjugate addition sequence over a chiral functionalized furan, which was prepared from commercially available tri-O-acetyl-D-glucal. The Michael addition step afforded two products with the same absolute configuration from a mixture of diastereomers.

Highly blue luminescent carbon nanoparticles with photo-luminescence quantum yields of 31.6%-40.6% were prepared by a one-step pyrolytic route from ethylenediamine-tetraacetic acid salts and a unique emission that is strongly dependent on pH, solvent, spin, and excitation wavelength was observed.

WO(3) modified titanate network film was prepared by an improved low-temperature two-step hydrothermal method. It showed a high mineralization yield (over 90%) for 2-propanol (IPA) photo-decomposition by only 2 h of visible light (lambda > or = 420 nm) irradiation. Furthermore, it exhibited quite good stability in this photocatalytic mineralization.

The mononuclear ferric compound Fe(H-5-Cl-thsa-Me)(5-Cl-thsa-Me)·H2O () was synthesized and characterized using powder/single-crystal X-ray diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and magnetic susceptibility measurements. This photo-responsive compound shows reversible, two-step spin-crossover behaviour. Moreover, dielectric anomalies were observed during t...

Three water-soluble cobalt porphyrins have been investigated as water oxidation catalysts via photo-initiation using Ru(II)(bpy)3(2+)/Na2S2O8. The pH dependence of the turnover frequency revealed maximum activity at pH 11. Based on the second order dependence on catalyst concentration for the rate of water oxidation, we suggest a bimolecular radical coupling process as the rate determining step.

[reaction: see text] A novel type of photo-protecting group for carbonyl compounds is described. The protecting group is readily accessed in one step from commercially available material. Installation of the protecting group upon the carbonyl compounds is achieved in excellent yields. The carbonyl compounds in their protected form are remarkably stable under various conditions and can be releas...

Zinc porphyrins possessing three p-carboxyphenyl anchoring groups with various substituents were prepared by a facile three-step route in good yields. Zn1NH3A with electron donating and anti-aggregation meso substituents has achieved the highest efficiency of 6.10%. These porphyrins with three p-carboxyphenyl groups are more stable toward photo-bleaching than their single anchoring group analogs.

The damaging efficacy towards OligoDeoxyriboNucleotides (ODNs) of two photoreactive polyazaaromatic ruthenium(II) complexes, Ru(T) and Ru(D), has been evaluated. Both compounds correspond to the known [Ru(TAP)(2)(dppz)](2+) complex, but they are anchored differently to a guanine-containing single strand ODN (probe strand). This has allowed us to investigate the influence of the interactions exi...
