Durability targets of automotive polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) could be crucially threatened by local hydrogen starvation, typically induced blockage gas channels. To gain a deep insight on the evolving such starvation events and related carbon corrosion losses, we have developed numerical model with transient nature that includes detailed transport phenomena electrochemistry...

Nitrogen and carbon stable isotopic compositions (δ15N and δ13C) of consumers have been used for physiological and food web studies. Previous studies have shown δ15N and δ13C values are affected by several biological and environmental factors during starvation, but the generality of the effect of starvation on δ15N and δ13C values has not yet been tested. Here, we performed a meta-analysis to e...

DnaK is essential for starvation-induced resistance to heat, oxidation, and reductive division in Escherichia coli. Studies reported here indicate that DnaK is also required for starvation-induced osmotolerance, catalase activity, and the production of the RpoS-controlled Dps (PexB) protein. Because these dnaK mutant phenotypes closely resemble those of rpoS (sigma38) mutants, the relationship ...

Nitrogen is an essential macronutrient required for plant growth and development. A number of genes respond to nitrogen starvation conditions. However, the functions of most of these nitrogen starvation-responsive genes are unclear. Our recent survey suggested that many microRNAs (miRNAs) are responsive to nitrogen starvation in Arabidopsis thaliana. Here, we identified a new miRNA (miR5090) fr...

Ultrastructural changes of the pancreatic exocrine cells after 3, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 and 42 days of starvation were observed in male rats aged from 16 to 18 months weighing between 600 and 700 grams. The number of zymogen granules after starvation decreased to less than about 70 per cent of that of the control. Changes in the rough endoplasmic reticulum were hardly seen up to 14 days of starvati...

The (p)ppGpp signal molecules play a central role in the stringent response (SR) to adapt to nutrient starvation in bacteria, yet the carbohydrate starvation induced adaptive response and the roles of SR in this response is not well characterized, especially in Gram-positives. Here, two (p)ppGpp synthetases RelA and RelQ are identified in Streptococcus suis, an important emerging zoonotic Gram-...

Phosphate starvation increased the secretion of at least six proteins by suspension cultured tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L. and L. pennellii) cells. Cells exhibited a biphasic response to phosphate (Pi) starvation. The early phase involved enhanced secretion of three proteins in response to transfer to a Pi-depleted media, while biomass accumulation continued at the same rate as in the Pi-s...

In their natural habitats, microorganisms are often exposed to periods of starvation if their substrates for energy generation or other nutrients are limiting. Many microorganisms have developed strategies to adapt to fluctuating nutrients and long-term starvation. In the environment, ammonia oxidizers have to compete with many different organisms for ammonium and are often exposed to long peri...

The ability of Mycobacterium tuberculosis auxotrophs to survive long-term starvation was measured. Tryptophan and histidine auxotrophs did not survive single-amino-acid starvation, whereas a proline auxotroph did. All three auxotrophs survived complete starvation. THP-1 cells were also able to restrict the growth of the tryptophan and histidine auxotrophs.
