Accurate estimation of an underlying function and its derivatives is one of the central problems in statistics. Parametric forms are often proposed based on the expert opinion or prior knowledge of the underlying function. However, these strict parametric assumptions may result in biased estimates when they are not completely accurate. Meanwhile, nonparametric smoothing methods, which do not im...

Present spline-tting methods used in computer vision do not fully address the main issues of developing an automatic and reliable algorithm , which are discussed in this paper. A paradigm for spline tting is proposed, with features of the algorithm selected such that the main issues are resolved. This is achieved through the use of B-spline active contours, the minimum description length princi...

For a smoothing spline or general penalized spline model, the smoothing parameter can be estimated using residual maximum likelihood (REML) methods by expressing the spline in the form of a mixed model. The possibility of bimodality in the profile log-likelihood function for the smoothing parameter of these penalized spline mixed models is demonstrated. A canonical transformation into independe...

In this paper, a new set of spline functions called ``Flat End Fuzzy Spline" is defined to interpolate given fuzzy data. Some important theorems on these splines together with their existence and uniqueness properties are discussed. Then numerical examples are presented to illustrate the differences between of using our spline and other interpolations that have been studied before.

Curve fitting with splines is a fundamental problem in computer-aided design and engineering. However, how to choose the number of knots and how to place the knots in spline fitting remain a difficult issue. This paper presents a framework for computing knots (including the number and positions) in curve fitting based on a sparse optimizationmodel. The framework consists of two steps: first, fr...

Third and fourth order convergent methods based on cubic nonpolynomial spline function at midknotes are presented for the numerical solution of a second order two-point boundary value problem with Neumann conditions. Using this spline function a few consistency relations are derived for computing approximations to the solution of the problem. Convergence analysis of these methods is discussed t...

Abstract In this paper, we present a new form of density based topology optimization where the design space is restricted to the B-spline space. An arbitrarily shaped design domain is embedded into a rectangular domain in which tensor-product B-splines are used to represent the density field. We show that, with proper choice of B-spline degrees and knot spans, the B-spline design space is free ...

Pottmann et al. propose an iterative optimization scheme for approximating a target curve with a B-spline curve based on square distance minimization, or SDM. The main advantage of SDM is that it does not need a parameterization of data points on the target curve. Starting with an initial B-spline curve, this scheme makes an active B-spline curve converge faster towards the target curve and pro...

BACKGROUND Several recent studies have reported significant health effects of air pollution even at low levels of air pollutants, but in most of these studies linear non-threshold relations were assumed. AIMS To investigate the NO2 mortality dose-response association in nine cities participating in the APHEA-2 project using two different methods: the meta-smooth and the cubic spline method. ...
