Spin-dependent lepton-nucleon scattering data have been used to investigate the validity of the concept of quark-hadron duality for the spin asymmetry A1. Longitudinally polarized positrons were scattered off a longitudinally polarized hydrogen target for values of Q2 between 1.2 and 12 GeV2 and values of W2 between 1 and 4 GeV2. The average double-spin asymmetry in the nucleon resonance region...

We study the single-transverse spin asymmetry for the Drell-Yan process. We consider production of the lepton pair at large transverse momentum, q⊥ ∼ Q, where Q is the pair’s mass. The spin asymmetry is then of higher twist and may be generated by twist-three quark-gluon correlation functions. Expanding the result for q⊥ ≪ Q, we make contact with the transversemomentum-dependent QCD factorizati...

A pseudomorphic monolayer of Au on Ir(001) is easily preparable and has a long lifetime in ultrahigh vacuum. Its geometrical and electronic structure was investigated by ab initio calculations within density functional theory. For a wide range of energies (below 100 eV) and angles of incidence of spin-polarized primary electrons we measured and calculated the intensity and spin asymmetry of the...

The BRAHMS experiment at RHIC has measured the transverse single spin asymmetries in polarized pp induced pion production at RHIC. The results from the RHIC run-5 shows a significant asymmetry for π + and π − at moderate x F. The trend of the data is in agreement with lower energy results while the absolute values are surprisingly large. The p T dependence is approximately inversely propotional...

We report nonlocal spin injection and detection experiments on mesoscopic Co-Al2O3-Cu spin valves. We have observed a temperature-dependent asymmetry in the nonlocal resistance between parallel and antiparallel configurations of the magnetic injector and detector. This strongly supports the existence of a nonequilibrium resistance that depends on the relative orientation of the detector magneti...

We show how to observe sizable angular correlations between the decay products of the top quark and those of the anti-top quark in top quark pair production and decay at hadron colliders. These correlations result from the large asymmetry in the rate for producing like-spin versus unlike-spin top quark pairs provided the appropriate spin axes are used. The effects of new physics at production o...

We calculate the contribution of meson and pomeron exchanges to the double-spin asymmetry in ρ-meson electromagnetic production at HERMES energies. We show that the observed double-spin asymmetries, which are large, can be explained by the interference between the natural parity f2-secondary Reggeon and the unnatural parity anomalous f1 exchanges.

A Siberian snake, which is a 180° spin rotator, can be used to preserve electrons', protons' or light ions' beam polarization during acceleration by forcing the spin tune to be constant and equal to 1/2, independent of the beam energy. A compact helical dipole snake, which creates only a small orbit excursion inside the snake, could be used in EPIC. Frequent polarization reversals, or spin-flip...

We show how the general and basic asymmetry between two fundamental degrees of freedom present in strongly correlated oxides, spin and orbital, has very profound repercussions on the elementary spin and orbital excitations. Whereas the magnons remain largely unaffected, orbitons become inherently coupled with spin fluctuations in spin-orbital models with antiferromagnetic and ferro-orbital orde...

The relative importance of interface, volume, and thermal scattering in spin-dependent hot-electron transmission of magnetic trilayers is quantified. While interfaces produce significant attenuation (factor 2.2 per interface), the spin asymmetry is dominated by volume scattering. Extracted thermal attenuation lengths (130 A at 300 K for Ni80Fe20) show that thermal spin-wave scattering is strong...
