We investigate the transition from unbanded to banded spherulitic growth in mixtures of ethylene carbonate with polyacrylonitrile. By carefully considering systematic errors, we show that the band spacing diverges with a power-law form showing scaling over nearly two decades. We also observe that the bands disorder as the transition point is approached. The critical exponent is nonclassical. On...

Metal nanoparticles embedded within polymeric systems can act as localized heat sources, facilitating in situ polymer processing. When irradiated with light resonant with the nanoparticle’s surface plasmon resonance (SPR), a nonequilibrium electron distribution is generated which rapidly transfers energy into the surrounding medium, resulting in a temperature increase in the immediate region ar...

Abstract Poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) is used to produce micro-/nanoporous biodegradable scaffolds, suitable for the release of mosquito repellent N , -diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET), based on thermally induced phase separation. For solvent-rich compositions up 30 m% PBS, it was found that PBS dissolves in DEET at elevated temperatures. During cooling, spherulitic crystallization occurs, wi...

Abstract On the >1 µm scale morphology of semicrystalline plastics like polyethylene or Nylon features spherulites, “shish-kebabs”, cylinddrites and other crystalline aggregates which strongly affect mechanical material properties. Current imaging techniques give only a 2D picture these objects. Here we show how they can be visualized in 3D using fluorescent labels confocal microscopy. As re...

Ferroelectric polymers with high flexibility and inherent piezo- pyro-electric properties have gained tremendous importance for next-generation wearable electronics. In this context, we investigate the intrinsic polarity mediated work function modulation in α-, γ-, β-crystalline phases of a ferroelectric polymer, namely, polyvinylidene fluoride. A wide range surface potentials (i.e., −5 to −70 ...

Monitoring of nucleus geometry and growth into dual types periodically ring-banded morphology in poly(nonamethylene terephthalate) (PNT), respectively, Type-1 Type-2, are done with detailed analyses using polarized-light optical microscopy (POM) in-situ CCD recording; the periodic assembly morphologies characterized atomic-force (AFM) scanning electron (SEM). Different annealing treatments (Tma...
