Solitary waves in a general nonlinear lattice are discussed, employing as a model the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a spatially periodic nonlinear coefficient. An asymptotic theory is developed for long solitary waves, that span a large number of lattice periods. In this limit, the allowed positions of solitary waves relative to the lattice, as well as their linear stability properties, h...

OBJECTIVE To compare and analyze the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of solitary or/and multiple CNS tuberculomas (CNSTs). METHODS The study was conducted at Central South University, First Xiangya Hospital, Changsha, Hunan, China between 1998-2008. Forty-two subjects with diagnosed CNSTs were compared and analyzed by multiple or solitary lesions seen on enhanced MRI. The fi...

BACKGROUND Despite evidence that many people engage in solitary drinking and that it might be associated with negative consequences, to date, little research has focused on this form of drinking behaviour. This study examined the prevalence and factors associated with solitary drinking, and assessed whether it is linked with hazardous alcohol use among males in nine countries of the former Sovi...

The random generation of coherent solitary waves from incoherent waves in a medium with an instantaneous nonlinearity has been observed. One excites a propagating incoherent spin wave packet in a magnetic film strip and observes the random appearance of solitary wave pulses. These pulses are as coherent as traditional solitary waves, but with random timing and a random peak amplitude.

The evolution of solitary waves of the gBBM equation is investigated compu-tationally. The experiments connrm previously derived theoretical stability estimates and, more importantly, yield insights into their behavior. For example, highly energetic unstable solitary waves when perturbed are shown to evolve into several stable solitary waves.

PURPOSE Bone scans showing solitary hot spots in the ribs pose diagnostic problems in patients with proved extraskeletal cancers. The authors wanted to determine the importance of solitary rib lesions and their correlation with other clinical manifestations. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study included 199 patients with solitary rib hot spots on their bone scans. The follow-up radiographic and sc...

Nonlinear Schrödinger equations (NLSs) with focusing power nonlinearities have solitary wave solutions. The spectra of the linearized operators around these solitary waves are intimately connected to stability properties of the solitary waves and to the long-time dynamics of solutions of NLSs. We study these spectra in detail, both analytically and numerically.
