BACKGROUND Tuberculosis and sarcoidosis are chronic diseases that rarely occur concomitantly. Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disorder characterized pathologically by the presence of non-caseating granulomas in involved tissues. Tuberculosis is infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis characterized by granulomas with caseous necrosis. CASE PRESENTATION We present a c...
INTRODUCTION The role of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the diagnosis of cutaneous tuberculosis in clinical practice has not been defined as no PCR assay has been tested in a large-scale clinical study. The objective of this study was to test the clinical utility of a PCR assay in the diagnosis of different types of cutaneous tuberculosis and tuberculids. MATERIALS AND METHODS Analysis of...
Chromoblastomycosis is caused by dematiaceous fungi. It develops after inoculation of the organism into the skin. We report a case of chromoblastomycosis in a pulmonary tuberculosis patient without known history of trauma. The lesions were initially diagnosed as sporotrichosis and skin tuberculosis. Histopathology of scales and skin biopsy specimen revealed sclerotic bodies, the hallmark of chr...
Figure 1. A, Hematoxylin-eosin stain of a skin wedge biopsy specimen obtained from the patient (original magnification, ϫ40) showing pseudo-epitheliomatous hyperplasia and granulomas involving the skin and cartilage. B, Hematoxylin-eosin stain of the skin wedge biopsy specimen (original magnification, ϫ400) showing a noncaseating granuloma. C and D, Photographs of the patient's ear, which demon...
Protective immunity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis requires CD4+ lymphocyte-mediated immune responses and IFN-gamma activity. As the primary portal of entry of M. tuberculosis is the lung, pulmonary immune responses against multiple M. tuberculosis Ags were compared between both M. tuberculosis-exposed tuberculin skin test-positive healthy household contacts (HHC) of patients with active sp...
Tuberculosis is the leading cause of death among adults infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), and rates of tuberculosis remain high even after preventive therapy. Among 908 HIV-infected adults in a trial of preventive treatment, we found self-reported alcohol consumption, low baseline CD4 count, high baseline viral load, and tuberculin skin test size >15 mm as independent risk facto...
To determine the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of a program to provide screening for tuberculosis infection and directly observed preventive therapy (DOPT) in methadone maintenance clinics, we determined completion rates of screening for tuberculosis infection, medical evaluation, and preventive therapy, as well as the number of active tuberculosis cases and tuberculosis-related deaths p...
Tuberculosis (TB) is an ancient disease that has infected humans for thousands of years. However, despite diagnostic tests that detect the disease and effective therapy, there are still millions of people worldwide who are infected with TB. The first TB test used to detect infected patients was a skin test that identifies individuals actively infected with TB. This test used a mix of proteins f...
Evidence from chemical and serological studies indicates that a cellular heteropolysaccharide, also found in lipid extracts and culture filtrate, is present as a group antigen in Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Ra and in other strains of mycobacteria representing M. kansasii, scotochromogenic and Battey strains. Polysaccharides from the four strains contain the same main sugars, arabinose, and ga...
QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-Tube (QFT-GIT) and tuberculin skin test (TST) results are reported in 23 children with active tuberculosis due to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium bovis. Overall QFT-GIT (96%) was more sensitive than TST (74%) for detecting tuberculosis infection in these patients.
