Elevated temperature synthesis has been used to generate virtually defect free SiO2 sheathed crystalline silicon nanowires and silica (SiO2) nanospheres which can be agglomerated to wire-like configurations impregnated with crystalline silicon. The SiO2 passivated ~sheathed! crystalline silicon nanowires, generated with a modified approach using a heated Si–SiO2 mix, with their axes parallel to...

Planar waveguides of SiO2:TiO2 (multilayer structure) and SiO2:CeO2 (thick layer) were prepared onto commercial glass substrates using a sol-gel technique combined with dip-coating. These glassy coatings were structural characterised by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis and by Confocal Microscopy. Thicknesses of 1230 nm and 4,15 μm and refractive indices of...

Nanoparticles with widely varying physical properties and origins (spherical versus irregular, synthetic versus biological, organic versus inorganic, flexible versus rigid, small versus large) have been previously noted to translocate across the cell plasma membrane. We have employed atomic force microscopy to determine if the physical disruption of lipid membranes, formation of holes and/or th...

The aim of the present study was to examine the apoptosis of the hepatocellular carcinoma cell line, HepG2, induced by treatment with folic acid-conjugated silica-coated gold nanorods (GNRs@SiO2-FA) in combination with radiotherapy, and to determine the involvement of apoptosis-related proteins. An MTT colorimetric assay was used to assess the biocompatibility of GNRs@SiO2-FA. The distribution ...

The tunnel spin polarization of Ni80Fe20/SiO2 interfaces has been investigated using a magnetic tunnel transistor MTT . The MTT with a Ni80Fe20/SiO2 emitter shows a magnetocurrent of 74% at 100 K, corresponding to a tunnel spin polarization of the Ni80Fe20/SiO2 interface of 27%. This is only slightly lower than the value of 34% for Ni80Fe20/Al2O3 interfaces determined in similar MTT structures....

Biopolymers are easily denatured by heating, a change in pH or chemical substances when they are immobilized on a substrate. To prevent denaturation of biopolymers, we developed a method to trap a polynucleotide on a substrate by hydrogen bonding using silica particles with surfaces modified by aminoalkyl chains ([A-AM silane]/SiO2). [A-AM silane]/SiO2 was synthesized by silane coupling reactio...

The liver is one of the target organs of silica nanoparticles (SiO2 NPs) but the toxic mechanism on the liver still remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the hepatic toxicity and its mechanism through repeated intravenous exposure to SiO2 NPs in ICR mice. Results indicated that SiO2 NPs could be distributed in hepatocytes, Kupffer cells, and hepatic stellate cells, and induce hepatic dys...

Layered double hydroxide (LDH)@SiO2 nanoparticles were developed as a delivery carrier for the plasmid DNA expressing the Newcastle disease virus F gene. The LDH was hydrotalcite-like materials. The plasmid DNA encapsulated in the LDH@SiO2 nanoparticles (pFDNA-LDH@SiO2-NPs) was prepared by the coprecipitation method, and the properties of pFDNA-LDH@SiO2-NPs were characterized by transmission el...

Cu/x-SiO2 catalysts with 4, 10, and 20 nm silica sols as supports was produced by ammonia evaporation method and characterized. Different nano-sized silica sols as supports significantly affected the structure and catalytic properties of the copper catalysts for ethylene glycol synthesis from dimethyl oxalate. Compared with Cu/20-SiO2 and Cu/4-SiO2 catalysts, the catalytic performance and stabi...

A multitude of nanoparticles, such as titanium oxide (TiO2), zinc oxide, aluminum oxide, gold oxide, silver oxide, iron oxide, and silica oxide, are found in many chemical, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and electronic products. Recently, SiO2 nanoparticles were shown to have an inert toxicity profile and no association with an irreversible toxicological change in animal models. Hence, exposure to S...
