Sinorhizobium fredii GR64 is a peculiar strain that is able to effectively nodulate bean but not soybean, the common host of S. fredii. Here we present the draft genome of S. fredii GR64. This information will contribute to a better understanding of the symbiotic rhizobium-plant interaction and of rhizobial evolution.
Bacterial surface components, especially exopolysaccharides, in combination with bacterial Quorum Sensing signals are crucial for the formation of biofilms in most species studied so far. Biofilm formation allows soil bacteria to colonize their surrounding habitat and survive common environmental stresses such as desiccation and nutrient limitation. This mode of life is often essential for surv...
288 time to identify the carbohydrate-bearing structures. Recent examples of glycoproteins originally detected with lectins that have now been identified are desmosomal glycoproteins [ 151 and integrins [ 161. Changes in the carbohydrate moieties of adhesion molecules can alter their function [ 17-19] and thus the lectin patterns may turn out to provide new insights into the changes in the adhe...
A bacterium isolated from soil (designated 9702-M4) synthesizes an extracellular polymer that facilitates the transport of such hydrophobic pollutants as polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as the toxic metals lead and cadmium in soil. Biolog analysis, growth rate determinations, and percent G+C content identify 9702-M4 as a strain of Sinorhizobium meliloti. Sequence analysis of a 16S rD...
Root mat of cucumbers and tomatoes has previously been shown to be caused by Agrobacterium radiobacter strains harboring a root-inducing Ri plasmid (pRi). Nine other pRi-harboring alpha-Proteobacteria have subsequently been isolated from root mat-infected crops. Fatty acid profiling and partial 16S rRNA sequence analysis identified three of these strains as being in the genus Ochrobactrum, five...
In the symbiosis between rhizobia and legumes, host plants can form symbiotic root nodules with multiple rhizobial strains, potentially showing different symbiotic performances in nitrogen fixation. Here, we investigated the presence of mixed nodules, containing rhizobia with different degrees of mutualisms, and evaluate their relative fitness in the Sinorhizobium meliloti-Medicago sativa model...
It was found that S. meliloti strain SmA818, which is cured of pSymA, could not grow on defined medium containing only formate and bicarbonate as carbon sources. Growth experiments showed that Rm1021 was capable of formate/bicarbonate-dependent growth, suggesting that it was capable of autotrophic-type growth. The annotated genome of S. meliloti Rm1021 contains three formate dehydrogenase genes...
The characterization of an oxyR insertion mutant provides evidences that katA, which encodes the unique H2O2-inducible HPII catalase, is regulated by OxyR not only in free-living Sinorhizobium meliloti but also in symbiotic S. meliloti. Moreover, oxyR is expressed independently of exogenous H2O2 and downregulates its own expression in S. meliloti.
