Colour emission of core-shell silica-PEG nanoparticles in water is tuned with an electrochemically induced energy transfer approach. The lack of solubility problems, side electrochemical reactions involving donors and acceptors within the nanoparticle, and the possibility of using many classes of dyes in ECL applications confirm the validity of this strategy.

This work describes the synthesis and applications of amphiphilic polystyrene-block-poly(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) (PS-b-PVP) copolymers as a silver and silica nanoparticle surface modification agent. The synthesis of PS-b-PVP was carried out using controlled/living radical polymerization techniques. The synthesis of the block copolymers was confirmed by gel permeation chromatography and hydrogen ...

Mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs) have shown great potential in improving drug delivery of poorly water soluble (BCS class II, IV) and poorly permeable (BCS class III, IV) drugs, as well as facilitating successful delivery of unstable compounds. The nanoparticle technology would allow improved treatment by reducing adverse reactions of currently approved drugs and possibly reintroducing pr...

While expectations and applications of nanotechnologies grow exponentially, little is known about interactions of engineered nanoparticles with multicellular organisms. Here we propose the transparent roundworm Caenorhabditis elegans as a simple but anatomically and biologically well defined animal model that allows for whole organism analyses of nanoparticle-bio-interactions. Microscopic techn...

Oxygen-deficient luminescent mesoporous silica nanoparticles with uniform morphology/size and integrated mesoporosity-luminescent property in a single nanoparticle are successfully synthesized by a bottom-up self-assembly route followed by a post-calcination process, and can be used to facilely load/deliver drugs into cells and luminescently image cells.

Nanoparticle-based materials, such as drug delivery vehicles and diagnostic probes, currently under evaluation in oncology clinical trials are largely not tumor selective. To be clinically successful, the next generation of nanoparticle agents should be tumor selective, nontoxic, and exhibit favorable targeting and clearance profiles. Developing probes meeting these criteria is challenging, req...

Here we report that silver nanoparticle necklaces can be readily formed by treatment of colloidal silica with ammoniacal silver complex solution followed by washing, deposition and ageing. We investigate the morphology of the produced materials and elucidate the key variables that influence this promising new approach to one-dimensional nanostructuring.

Unusual antifogging antireflective thin films with a maximum transmittance of 98.9% have been realized surprisingly by depositing a hollow silica nanoparticle layer on top of an antifogging polymer layer, which was considered as an irrational design according to the previous knowledge.

A multifunctional drug delivery vehicle consisting of a tubular shaped silica host, a compact superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticle layer and a hyaluronic acid surface coating was developed as a theranostic platform, for in vivo MR imaging and magnetically guided/cancer targeted drug delivery.

A mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) based fluorescent sensor for dopamine was constructed with probes inside particle pores and β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) molecules on the particle surface as the selective barricade. The synergistic action of both the hydrophilic rim and hydrophobic cavity of β-CD ensures that the sensor can distinguish dopamine from other biological competitors.
