A wireless sensor network is composed of a distributed collection of nodes which corporate in performing sensing, computation and communication tasks. Since sensor nodes operate on battery power, their communication range will decline as time passes. When the energy of the sensor nodes has declined to a level that they cannot communicate with each other, the network cannot be sustained and migh...

We present a sensor network that monitors a hallway. It consists of 180 load sensors connected to 30 wireless sensor nodes, where the setup is of extremely low cost and easily transferred to other settings. Our network serves as a testbed for in-network data processing algorithms, for which it is highly suitable due to the many correlated sensors.

We consider a design problem in which a one-dimensional array of sensors, connected via a wireless network, is used to track a moving vehicle. Individual sensors occasionally lose the vehicle, but can relocate it with aid from neighboring sensors. Communication between sensors is costly, so we accordingly optimize the communication protocol within a class of broadcast-type protocols to maximize...

The idea of partial coverage is provided in this paper, which means that the distance among data trends gathered by neighbor sensors is so small that, in some period, we can cluster those sensors, and replace the cluster with certain sensor in this cluster to form the virtual sensor network topology. But adopting this approach, we need to solve two problems: 1) how to characterize the distance ...

In this paper, we consider the self-organisation of sensors within a network deployed for wide area surveillance. We present a decentralised coordination algorithm based upon the max-sum algorithm and demonstrate how self-organisation can be achieved within a setting where sensors are deployed with no a priori information regarding their local environment. These energy-constrained sensors first...

Early Warning Intrusion Detection System (EWIS) is a distributed global scoped Internet threat monitoring system with the potential of detecting large scale malicious events as early as possible. The system’s architecture includes a network of distributed low-interaction sensors and a central server [1]. The sensors are small computing platforms [2] that by design are easy to deploy in a distri...

The article describes the design of the Community Seismic Network, which is a dense open seismic network based on low cost sensors. The inputs are from sensors hosted by volunteers from the community by direct connection to their personal computers, or through sensors built into mobile devices. The server is cloud-based for robustness and to dynamically handle the load of impulsive earthquake e...

We study a network of non-collaborating sensors that make noisy measurements of some physical process X and communicate their readings to a central processing unit. Limited power resources of the sensors severely restrict communication rates. Sensors and their communication links are both subject to failure, however, the central unit is guaranteed to receive data from a minimum fraction of the ...
