Monogeneans are common ectoparasitic flatworms of marine fish. The diplectanid monogenean Diplectanum aequans (Wegener, 1857) (Diplectanidae) is one the most important ectoparasites in wild and cultured European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax (Linnaeus, 1758) worldwide. This parasitic species cause severe pathological damages gills death infected bass. Presently, there no information on molecula...
In this paper we evaluate and discuss the tissue damage due to Anisakis larvae in experimentally infected sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax). This is the first endoscopic and laparoscopic study, that has revealed in two fishes hemorrhages and/or nodules on the serosal surface of the intestine. The evidence of tissue change is an unusual occurrence in Anisakis infected teleost fish.
The European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) is an important farmed fish species in the Mediterranean area, very sensitive to the infection by encephalopathy and retinopathy virus (VERv), or Betanodavirus, which causes massive mortalities. Effective vaccines to fight the pathology are not yet available and in this work we describe a promising intraperitoneal immunization route against VERv of s...
The increasing worldwide aquaculture output and concomitant decrease in the stocks of feedgrade fish used for fish oil production has made fish oil replacement in feeds a priority for the aquaculture industry. The regulation of fatty acid metabolism in fish is important in order to determine strategies for the best use of plant oils in diets for commercially important cultured fish species. We ...
Two fish protein hydrolysates (FPH) were incorporated into four diets prepared for start-feeding sea bass larvae, at two different levels (10% and 19% of total ingredients): a commercial FPH, CPSP, in which the molecular mass of the main fraction of soluble peptides (51%) was between 500-2500 Da, and an experimental FPH obtained by acidic silage of sardine offal, SH, with a main portion of solu...
Mammalian bone is an active tissue in which osteoblasts and osteoclasts balance bone mass. This process of adaptive modelling and remodelling is probably regulated by strain-sensing osteocytes. Bone of advanced teleosts is acellular yet, despite the lack of osteocytes, it is capable of an adaptive response to physical stimuli. Strenuous exercise is known to induce lordosis. Lordosis is a ventra...
Marine fish larvae undergo major morphological and cellular changes during the first month of life. The ontogeny of the gastrointestinal tract combines these two aspects of the larval development and is very interesting in that the timing of functional changes appears genetically hard-wired. The goal of this paper is to give an overview of the gastrointestinal development process in marine fish...
The melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) is a G protein-coupled receptor mainly expressed in the central nervous system of vertebrates. Activation of the MC4R leads to a decrease in food intake, whereas inactivating mutations are a genetic cause of obesity. The binding of agouti-related protein (AGRP) reduces not only agonist-stimulated cAMP production (competitive antagonist) but also the basal acti...
