UNLABELLED PURPOSE OF THE STUDY In a long-term perspective, it is better to remove implants after fracture healing. However, subsequent full or excessive loading of an extremity may result in refracture, and the bone with holes after screw removal may present a site with predilection for this. The aim of the study was to find ways of how to decrease risk factors for refracture in such a case. T...

In I952 Duncan McKeever described a method of arthrodesing this joint, by means of a screw inserted across the excised joint, the head of the screw lying under the proximal phalanx, the screw itself occupying the whole of the medulla of the metatarsal shaft. He appeared to be wholly satisfied with the results, but patients who have had this type of fusion have, on occasion, complained of pain o...

BACKGROUND In a retrospective study, risk factors for complications after the bridging of mandibular defects using reconstruction plates were reviewed. Especially the loosening of the plate-screw-mandible complex should be analyzed with a finite element model in order to reduce plate complications in future. PATIENTS AND METHODS We examined 60 patients who underwent a treatment with reconstru...

This study compared the biomechanics of 3 fixation techniques: bilateral pedicle screw (BPS) fixation, unilateral pedicle screw (UPS) fixation, and UPS supplemented with translaminar facet screw (UPS+TLFS) fixation. The study was conducted in an L3-L5 finite element model. Three different finite element models were created by adopting different fixation techniques after removal of the left L3-L...

Acetabular fractures can be treated with variable method. In this study, acetabular posterior wall fracture was treated with arthroscopic reduction and fixation using cannulated screw. The patient recovered immediately and had a satisfactory outcome. In some case of acetabular fracture could be good indication with additional advantages of joint debridement and loose body removal. So, we report...

A case of arterial rupture of the profunda femoris arterial branches, following dynamic hip screw (DHS) fixation for an intertrochanteric femoral fracture, is presented. Bleeding is controlled by coil embolization, but, later on, the patient underwent orthopedic material removal due to an infection of a large femoral hematoma.

We present a potential indication of a short-stemmed femoral component in a patient with multiple comorbidities presenting with hip posttraumatic osteoarthritis and a long dynamic condylar screw osteosynthesis plate. Removal of the plate and implantation of a long stem would have been related to a much longer operative time and potential local or systemic complications.

Fracture fixation of the medial malleolus in rotationally unstable ankle fractures typically results in healing with current fixation methods. However, when failure occurs, pullout of the screws from tension, compression, and rotational forces is predictable. We sought to biomechanically test a relatively new technique of bicortical screw fixation for medial malleoli fractures. Also, the AO gro...

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and complication rate of guided growth for the treatment of patients with a moderate leg-length discrepancy. The authors retrospectively reviewed all patients treated with guided growth for a moderate leg-length discrepancy at their institution between October 2004 and December 2010. Thirty-four patients met the inclusion criteria from...

PURPOSE A new and simple operative technique has been developed to provide internal fixation for midshaft clavicle fractures. This involves the use of a large fragment Herbert Screw that is entirely embedded within the bone. Screw fixation is combined with bone grafting from intramedullary reamings of the fracture fragments. The purpose of this report is to assess the outcomes following treatme...
