The human fetal birth weight does not scale linearly with the weight of the placenta, but exhibits an allometric scaling consistent with Kleiber's Law for the basal metabolic rate. We discuss the possible causes of such scaling, and its clinical consequences. In particular, we show that the value of the scaling exponent is an indicator of a normal fetoplacental development.
We describe the nature of human behavioral organization, specifically how resting and active periods are interwoven throughout daily life. Active period durations with physical activity count successively above a predefined threshold, when rescaled with individual means, follow a universal stretched exponential (gamma-type) cumulative distribution with characteristic time, both in healthy indiv...
When one removes a sector from a circular sheet of paper and glues the edges back together, the resulting shape is approximately conical. Despite the simplicity of the setup, a proof of this ’fact’ starting from basic models for thin elastic sheets has not been found yet. In this talk we investigate the scaling of the elastic energy with the sheet thickness h for this setting. Our main innovati...
We investigate the origin of a unified scaling relation in spiral galaxies. Observed spiral galaxies are spread on a plane in the three-dimensional logarithmic space of luminosity L, radius R, and rotation velocity V. The plane is expressed as L~&parl0;VR&parr0;alpha in the I passband, where alpha is a constant. On the plane, observed galaxies are distributed in an elongated region which looks ...
With the rapid development of Deep Neural Networks (DNNs), various network models that show strong computing power and impressive expressive power are proposed. However, there is no comprehensive informational interpretation of DNNs from the perspective of information theory. Due to the nonlinear function and the uncertain number of layers and neural units used in the DNNs, the network structur...
Medium modifications of parton fragmentation provide a novel tomographic tool for the study of the hot and dense matter created in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. Their quantitative analysis, however, is complicated by the strong dynamical expansion of the collision region. Here we establish for the multiple scattering induced gluon radiation spectrum a scaling law which relates m...
Long-range temporal and spatial correlations have been reported in a remarkable number of studies. In particular power-law scaling in neural activity raised considerable interest. We here provide a straightforward algorithm not only to quantify power-law scaling but to test it against alternatives using (Bayesian) model comparison. Our algorithm builds on the well-established detrended fluctuat...
In our post-genomic era, by using DNA microarrays and GeneChips technologies, the amount of mRNA contained in cells from different tissues and organisms can be collected at different time points. Moreover, the abundance of mRNA of a gene (i.e., gene expression) fluctuates in time, and it reveals correlations among many genes. Although there are currently many efforts to understand the gene regu...
Recent studies of urban scaling show that important socioeconomic city characteristics such as wealth and innovation capacity exhibit a nonlinear, particularly a power law scaling with population size. These nonlinear effects are common to all cities, with similar power law exponents. These findings mean that the larger the city, the more disproportionally they are places of wealth and innovati...
