a r t i c l e i n f o Geologists, physicists, and mathematicians have studied ripples and dunes for more than a century, but despite considerable effort, no general model has been proposed to explain perhaps the most fundamental property of their morphology: why are some bedforms straight, continuous, parallel, and uniform in planform geometry (i.e. two-dimensional) whereas others are irregular...

To understand the neural representation of broadband, dynamic sounds in primary auditory cortex (AI), we characterize responses using the spectro-temporal response field (STRF). The STRF describes, predicts, and fully characterizes the linear dynamics of neurons in response to sounds with rich spectro-temporal envelopes. It is computed from the responses to elementary "ripples," a family of sou...

Spatial memory, among many other brain processes, shows hemispheric lateralization. Most of the published evidence suggests that the right hippocampus plays a leading role in the manipulation of spatial information. Concurrently in the hippocampus, memory consolidation during sleep periods is one of the key steps in the formation of newly acquired spatial memory traces. One of the most characte...

Population bursts of the CA3 network, which occur during eating, drinking, awake immobility, and slow-wave sleep, produce a large field excitatory postsynaptic potential throughout stratum radiatum of the CA1 field (sharp wave). The CA3 burst sets into motion a short-lived, dynamic interaction between CA1 pyramidal cells and interneurons, the product of which is a 200 Hz oscillatory field poten...

Aligned samples of lipid bilayers have been fully hydrated from water vapor in a different type of x-ray chamber. Our use of aligned samples resolves issues concerning the ripple phase that were ambiguous from previous powder studies. In particular, our x-ray diffraction data conclusively demonstrate that, on cooling from the L alpha to the P beta' phase, both chiral and racemic samples of dipa...

In this paper a two-phase supply modulator suitable for envelope tracking power amplifier is presented. The designed supply modulator has the linear assisted switching architecture. Two-phase architecture is used in order to reduce the output switching ripples. The proposed architecture uses hysteretic control instead of pulse width modulation (PWM) which significantly reduces the circuit compl...

This paper proposes a method for modeling and rendering realistic desert scenes. A desert terrain includes sand dunes and wind ripples. We use two types of scale models to form them. We render the dunes with the wind-ripples by bump-mapping using LODs (Levels of Detail).

This paper deals with torque ripples, Permanent magnet synchronous motors are widely used in high performance applications. This paper reviews a controller based design techniques. Controller based techniques for minimizing torque ripples involve the use of algorithms. Finally, successful suppression of pulsating torque relies on the systems approach to all aspects of the PMSM.

We study the initial instability of flat sand surface and further nonlinear dynamics of wind ripples. The proposed continuous model of ripple formation allowed us to simulate the development of a typical asymmetric ripple shape and the evolution of a sand ripple pattern. We suggest that this evolution occurs via ripple merger preceded by several soliton-like interaction of ripples.

[1] Observations of fresh impact craters by the Opportunity rover and in high‐resolution orbital images constrain the latest phase of granule ripple migration at Meridiani Planum to have occurred between ∼50 ka and ∼200 ka. Opportunity explored the fresh Resolution crater cluster and Concepción crater that are superposed on and thus younger than the ripples. These fresh craters have small dark ...
