We present here the design of nano-inclusions made of properly arranged collections of plasmonic metallic nano-particles that may exhibit a resonant magnetic dipole collective response in the visible domain. When such inclusions are embedded in a host medium, they may provide metamaterials with negative effective permeability at optical frequencies. We also show how the same inclusions may prov...

A new frequency-domain electromagnetic algorithm is developed for simulating curved interfaces between anisotropic dielectrics embedded in a Yee mesh with second-order error in resonant frequencies. The algorithm is systematically derived using the finite integration formulation of Maxwell’s equations on the Yee mesh. Second-order convergence of the error in resonant frequencies is achieved by ...

This work experimentally studied locally resonant absorption mechanism in phononic glass. From these results, we attributed its strong sound attenuation to its locally resonant units and its broadband absorption to its networked structure. These experiments also indicated that the porosity of the phononic glass must be tuned to achieve the best sound absorption at given frequencies.

It is shown that the highly resonant characteristic of split ring resonator (SRR) can be significantly improved by introducing new pole pairs to Lorentz atomic model, and by adjusting their resonant frequencies and damping terms. A new SRR cell of metamaterials containing all these required poles is then designed for the desired bandwidth.

We theoretically introduce a new type of optical all-pass filter based on guided resonance in coupled photonic crystal slabs. The filter exhibits near-complete transmission for both on- and off-resonant frequencies and yet generates large resonant group delay. We further show that such a filter can be mechanically switched into a flat-top band rejection filter.

Metamaterial designs are typically limited to operation over a narrow bandwidth dictated by the resonant line width. Here we report a compliant metamaterial with tunability of Δλ ∼ 400 nm, greater than the resonant line width at optical frequencies, using high-strain mechanical deformation of an elastomeric substrate to controllably modify the distance between the resonant elements. Using this ...

We consider the possibility of wave propagation in the normally disallowed ~band-gap! region of a resonant optical medium, that is, in the band of frequencies near resonance where the real part of the frequencydependent dielectric function is negative. We demonstrate that wave propagation can become allowed by the application of a strong electromagnetic field resonant with some additional trans...

Resonant pressure microsensors are widely used in the fields of aerospace exploration and atmospheric pressure monitoring due to their advantages of quasi-digital output and long-term stability, which, however, requires the use of additional temperature sensors for temperature compensation. This paper presents a resonant pressure microsensor capable of self-temperature compensation without the ...

The knowledge of the eigenmodes of resonant accelerator cavities is essential for the determination of their performance characteristics, comprising resonant frequencies and field distributions inside the cavities. Apart from the material properties the eigenmodes of a cavity depend on its geometry. In spite of the high elaborateness during the complex fabrication process, minor deviations of t...

Making use of mechanical resonance has many benefits for the design of microscale devices. A key to successfully incorporating this phenomenon in the design of a device is to understand how the resonant frequencies of interest are affected by changes to the geometric parameters of the design. For simple geometric shapes, this is quite easy, but for complex nonlinear designs, it becomes signific...
