This paper discusses the localized eigenstrain method, a new technique for the determination of triaxial residual stresses deep within long welded joints. The technique follows from the " Inherent Strain Method " developed by Ueda, which uses a combined experimental and analytical approach to determine the source of residual stress (i.e., " eigenstrain " or, equivalently, " inherent strain ") b...
Recent research results indicate that eddy current conductivity measurements can be exploited for nondestructive evaluation of subsurface residual stresses in surface-treated nickel-base superalloy components. According to this approach, the depth-dependent electric conductivity profile is calculated from the measured frequency-dependent apparent eddy current conductivity spectrum. Then, the re...
Various stresses add to the railway rails and accumulate fatigue damage due to daily use. Fracture mechanics clarification concerning the growth behavior of cracks is needed, in order to decide the inspection period and the cycle [1], . Though the crack progression and influence of residual stress on fatigue strength has been researched [3] for many years, they are not clear now. The aims of th...
Neutron diffraction measurements have been performed to determine the full residual stress tensor along the expected crack path in an austenitic stainless steel (Esshete 1250) compact tension weld specimen. A destructive slitting method was then implemented on the same specimen to measure the stress intensity factor profile associated with the residual stress field as a function of crack length...
This article reports on a method for the measurement of residual stress in multicrystalline silicon ribbons, based on the infrared photoelastic technique. This self-calibrating method allows the in situ determination of the photoelastic coefficients and can thus be used for any crystal orientation. The method was validated by the experimental determination of the photoelastic coefficient of mon...
Through-thickness residual-stress profiles in rolled 7050-T74 aluminum plate were measured before and after stress relief by stretching (-Tx51). Measurement required adapting the crack compliance method to measure both inplane stress components. Unexpected features in the profiles could be explained by through-thickness yield strength variations caused by crystallographic texture.
shrink fit process is a useful technique in order to introduce beneficial residual stress in compound pressure vessels. in this paper, the effects of geometrical tolerances on residual stresses have been studied for a compound shrink fitted pressure vessel, practically. three layers, which are designed based on an optimum nominal thickness and overlap dimensions and tolerances, have been fitted...
Stress relieving is a common practice among manufacturing codes for reducing the magnitude of residual stresses in welded, quenched, and tempered steel structures and pressure vessels. The present work investigates the effect of stress relieving at 480, 560, 620, and 680°C on the microstructure and mechanical properties of 20 mm ASTM A517 Gr. B steel plate weldments produced by shielded metal a...
Vascular growth and remodeling during embryonic development are associated with blood flow and pressure induced stress distribution, in which residual strains and stresses play a central role. Residual strains are typically measured by performing in vitro tests on the excised vascular tissue. In this paper, we investigated the possibility of estimating residual strains and stresses using physio...
