In milk-alkali syndrome the degree of renal impairment varies greatly. Few reports have been published describing structural changes on renal biopsy. In three illustrative cases, impairment of renal function was related to morphological changes shown on percutaneous biopsy. Milk-alkali syndrome should be considered as a cause of renal dysfunction in patients with a long history of dyspensia.

Small renal masses (SRMs) are defined as radiologically enhancing renal masses of less than 4 cm in maximal diameter. The incidence of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has increased in recent years, which is mainly due to the rise in incidental detection of localized SRMs. However, the cancer-specific mortality rate is not increasing. This discrepancy may be dependent on the indolent nature of SRMs. ...

Background IgA nephropathy is a primary cause of renal failure, and inflammation and renal fibrosis are the main mechanisms leading to kidney damage. The serum fibrinogen level is closely related to inflammatory states, but its relationship to the prognosis of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) is unclear. Materials and Methods 1053 patients diagnosed with IgAN after renal biopsy were enrolled from two N...

AIMS To determine the role of interstitial myofibroblasts in the progression of membranous nephropathy; and to assess the predictive value of quantifying myofibroblasts in determining long term renal outcome. METHODS All cases of membranous nephropathy, diagnosed by renal biopsy at University Hospital of South Manchester between 1984 and 1987, were studied retrospectively. The biopsy specimen...

Purpose: To classify the results of renal biopsy in pediatric patients and to compare pathological findings with clinical features. Methods: This study included data of 318 children who underwent renal biopsy at our hospital between December 1987 and November 2014. Biopsy specimens were examined histopathologically using light, immunofluorescence, and electron microscopy. Results: Asymptomatic ...

BACKGROUND Reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and proteinuria are risk factors for end-stage renal disease (ESRD), of which benign nephrosclerosis is a common cause. However, few biopsy-based studies have assessed these associations. METHODS We performed retrospective cohort study of 182 Japanese patients who underwent renal biopsy from June 1985 through March 2014 and who we...

Objectives: Several biologics therapy reportedly regress gastric amyloid deposition in AA amyloidosis patients, but it is uncertain whether they can also regress renal amyloid deposition. We carried out serial renal biopsy to clarify the regression of amyloid deposition in kidney by biologics. Methods: After the diagnosis of AA amyloidosis was determined by gastric biopsy to rheumatoid arthriti...

Pathological examination of a radical nephrectomy for papillary renal cell carcinoma showed tumour present within the perinephric fat, with a morphology indicative of iatrogenic tumour cell tracking caused by previous biopsy of the mass. This is a rare complication of percutaneous biopsy, and as this procedure is becoming more common in investigating renal masses, it is important that the profe...

AIMS/INTRODUCTION Patients with diabetic nephropathy (DN) typically show varying degrees of proteinuria and renal impairment. Because these clinical signs are frequently observed in other glomerulopathies, renal biopsy is required to make a definitive diagnosis of DN. We carried out the present study to evaluate the significance of renal biopsy for patients who have been presumptively diagnosed...

Dabigatran is a direct thrombin inhibitor that reduces the risk of systemic embolism in patients with nonvalvular atrial fibrillation. We report a case of an elderly man who developed unexplained rapid decline in renal function 6 weeks after starting dabigatran. A renal biopsy was planned to find out the etiology of acute renal failure, but the patient has significantly prolonged coagulation pa...
