BACKGROUND Relapsing fever spirochetes are global yet neglected pathogens causing recurrent febrile episodes, chills, nausea, vomiting, and pregnancy complications. Given these nonspecific clinical manifestations, improving diagnostic assays for relapsing fever spirochetes will allow for identification of endemic foci and expedite proper treatment. Previously, an antigen designated the Borrelia...

BACKGROUND Relapsing fever borreliae are vector-borne bacteria responsible for febrile infection in humans in North America, Africa, Asia, and in the Iberian Peninsula in Europe. Relapsing fever borreliae are phylogenetically closely related, yet they differ in pathogenicity and vectors. Their long-term taxonomy, based on geography and vector grouping, needs to be re-apprised in a genomic conte...

We describe a nested polymerase chain reaction for the identification of Borrelia species from serum of patients with unidentified fevers. This technique, based on single nucleotide polymorphisms of the 16S ribosomal RNA gene, was used to test blood samples from 7,750 patients, 33 of whom were diagnosed with spirochete infections. Borrelia crocidurae was the only species identified.

After the generalized famine fevers had come to an end in England they continued to scourge Ireland for centuries, where their course may be taken as a repetition of the happenings in England in earlier times. During the eighteenth century and part of the nineteenth, large numbers of the Irish peasantry. lived in a deplorable state of poverty; lacking reserves, one or two bad seasons might suff...

In this paper, we describe the dynamics of a vector-borne relapsing disease, such as tick-borne relapsing fever, using the methods of compartmental models. After some motivation and model description we provide a proof of a conjectured general form of the reproductive ratio R0, which is the average number of new infections produced by a single infected individual. A disease free equilibrium und...

Serological response to louse-borne relapsing fever in Ethiopia was determined by immobilization tests using Borrelia recurrentis cultures. Isolates from 26 patients tested with autologous convalescent sera showed from 90 to 100% of the organisms had been immobilized. Sera from thirteen patients were tested with autologous and heterologous strains. Several reacted with the majority and two show...
