Fiber Raman amplifiers are important component of wavelength division multiplexed fiber-optic communication systems. The number of pumps, determination of powers, wavelengths and pumping schemes are main design criteria to operate these amplifiers. This paper investigates the effect of counter propagating pumping in fiber Raman amplifier. Pumping options like single, two and seven counter propa...

We report on the first observation of Raman lasing near 630 nm from 532-nm-pumped, glycerolwater microdroplets on a superhydrophobic surface. Results of cavity-enhanced Raman scattering and Raman lasing experiments are described. ©2008 Optical Society of America OCIS codes: 140.3550 Lasers, Raman; 350.3950, Micro-optics; 230.3990, Microstructure devices; 230.5750, Resonators; 190.5650, Raman Ef...

The nonlinear process of stimulated Raman scattering is important for silicon photonics as it enables optical amplification and lasing. To understand the dynamics of silicon Raman amplifiers (SRAs), a numerical approach is generally employed, even though it provides little insight into the contribution of different SRA parameters to the signal amplification process. In this paper, we solve the ...

Spectral compression of femtosecond pulses by second harmonic generation in the presence of substantial group velocity dispersion provides a convenient source of narrowband Raman pump pulses for femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS). We discuss here a simple and efficient modification that dramatically increases the versatility of the second harmonic spectral compression technique. A...

Cascaded Raman wavelength shifting up to the fourth order ranging from 2092 to 2450 nm is demonstrated using a nanosecond pump at 1995 nm in a low-loss As(38)Se(62) suspended-core microstructured fiber. These four Stokes shifts are obtained with a low peak power of 11 W, and only 3 W are required to obtain three shifts. The Raman gain coefficient for the fiber is estimated to (1.6±0.5)×10(-11) ...

We report quasi-continuous-wave, cascaded Nd:GdVO(4) self-Raman lasers based on a secondary Raman transition at 382 cm(-1) for which the Raman gain was estimated to be 0.7 cm/GW. Laser output was obtained in the near-infrared at 1108 nm, 1156 nm and 1227 nm. By incorporating intracavity sum-frequency generation (SFG) or second-harmonic generation (SHG), high power output at four discrete visibl...

We describe the first observation of spontaneous Raman emission, stimulated amplification, and lasing in a SiGe waveguide. A pulsed optical gain of 16dB and a lasing threshold of 25 W peak pulse power (20 mW average) is observed for a Si1-xGex waveguide with x=7.5%. At the same time, a 40 GHz frequency downshift is observed in the Raman spectrum compared to that of a silicon waveguide. The spec...

Femtosecond stimulated Raman spectroscopy (FSRS) is a vibrational spectroscopy technique that has been used in a wide variety of applications: from transient vibrational signature tracking to amplifying weak normal Raman scattering signals. Presented here is an application of FSRS to quantify the differential Raman scattering cross sections (DRSCs) of glucose. In using FSRS to determine the DRS...
