INTRODUCTION Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are tumors of mesenchymal origin commonly detected in stomach and small bowel. GIST arising primarily from the anal canal is extremely rare. Due to the malignant potential, these tumors are treated with radical surgery like abdominoperineal resection. But with the advent of imatinib therapy and a better understanding of the tumor biology, some...
Primary osteosarcoma of the spermatic cord is a rare tumour with few mentions in the literature. A 59-year-old man presented with a large painless left inguinal and scrotal mass. The patient underwent excision of the mass, which arose from the spermatic cord. A left high dissection of the spermatic cord and radical orchiectomy due to associated atrophy of the left testicle were performed. Patho...
With increasing use of cardiac fluoroscopic intervention, the incidence of fluoroscopy-induced radiation ulcer is increasing. Radiation ulcer is difficult to manage and currently there are no treatment guidelines. To identify the optimal treatment approaches for managing cardiac fluoroscopy-induced radiation ulcers, we retrospectively reviewed medical records of 13 patients with fluoroscopy-ind...
Carcinoma of the nasal vestibule often requires radical surgical excision, which results in total or partial loss of the nose followed by radiation therapy. A noninvasive, cost-effective technique for rehabilitation of a patient with squamous cell carcinoma of the nasal vestibule following partial rhinectomy and radiation therapy using heat-polymerizing clear acrylic resin is presented.
Upper tract urothelial carcinomas in the proximal ureter are an uncommon disease. We present a case in which it was firstly detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization and not by endoscopy and radiologic imaging. Consequently, a radical nephroureterectomy with excision of the bladder cuff was performed as the gold standard treatment.
Adenocarcinomas arising in the female urethra have been rarely reported. Here we report a case of laparoscopic radical cystourethrectomy with incontinent urinary diversion in a patient with adenocarcinoma in the urethra and bladder. A 60-year-old female presenting with a history of recurrent cystitis and painless hematuria was referred to our facility with voiding difficulty and a urethral mass...
The case of a 10-year-old girl with juvenile carcinoma of the breast is presented. The literature is reviewed and current thoughts relating to the treatment of breast carcinoma in children are discussed. The major controversy seems to revolve around the choice between radical and local excision in cases of juvenile or secretory breast cancer.
Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is very rare tumor of dermis layer of skin with the incidence of only 1 case per million per year. DFSP rarely leads to a metastasis (Less than 5% have metastasis), but DFSP can recur locally. We publish a rare case of a recurrent dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and its management with radical excision and interval skin grafting.
Polymorphous low-grade adenocarcinoma (PLGA) of the parotid gland is rare. We describe a new case in which the patient underwent parotidectomy only to experience an extensive recurrence 2 years later. The recurrence was treated with radical surgical excision and radiation therapy, and the patient remained disease-free at 5 years of follow-up. We also review the literature on primary parotid PLGA.
Based on a review of the literature, this paper provides an update on surgical treatment of middle and low rectal cancer and discusses issues of debate surrounding that treatment. The main goal of the surgical treatment of rectal cancer is radical resection of the tumor and surrounding lymphatic tissue. Local excision of early rectal cancer can be another treatment option, in which the patient ...
