Since the auditory system does not resolve the higher frequency components, the temporal features of vowel-like sounds are comparable and hence coded similarly as those of amplitude-modulated tones. Research work on automatic demodulation of speech can be motivated because of the hypothesis proposing that the human brain has neural cells specialized in Amplitude Modulation (AM) and Frequency Mo...

In this thesis a new modeling approach is developed which is able to predict human performance in a variety of experimental conditions related to modulation detection and modulation masking. Envelope uctuations are analyzed with a modulation lterbank. The parameters of the lterbank were adjusted to allow the model to account for modulation detection and modulation masking data with narrowband c...

This report details our implementation and observations of a 16QAM and 4-QAM system. The modem was implemented in software using Simulink. Error bit rates as a function of SNR were studied using Monte Carlo estimation techniques.

Simulations have investigated single laser 100G Ethernet links enabled by CAP-16 using QAM receivers that not only lower significantly system timing jitter sensitivity but also outperform PAM and standard CAP in terms of power margin. OCIS codes: (060.2330) Fiber optics communications; (060.4080) Modulation.

Two recognition tasks are discussed in which pre-processing based on amplitude modulation (AM) maps is compared with other feature extraction strategies. In the first task we show how the AM map representation can be used to segregate voiced speech signals from one another. The second shows how the AM representation can be used for robust digit recognition in additive noise. Natural vowels from...

In the community of Human Computer Interface (HCI) researchers have been working for several years in trying to emulate a human communication system, using innovative technologies and methodologies, based on the emotion recognition in facial expressions and speech [1-3]. Speech emotion recognition (SER) [4] is a challenging framework in demanding human machine interaction systems. Standard appr...

Amplitude modulation (AM) of noise from wind turbines and its more extreme version named “other amplitude modulation” OAM have been investigated intensively during the last few years due to the additional annoyance impact this type of noise has compared to broad band noise. In a recent published research by RenewableUK the hypothesis has been that one of the causes of OAM is transient stall on ...

In optics, the superposition of two or more light beams at any point over space can produce the apparition of interference fringes. When these fringes are applied to resolve a problem in industry or they are related with some property of an investigation matter of interest in some area of physics, chemistry, biology, etc., the evaluation of them is a very necessary task. One of the most used me...

We propose a computational auditory scene analysis (CASA) model for monaural speech segregation. It deals with low-frequency and high-frequency signals differently. For high-frequency signals, it generates segments based on common amplitude modulation (AM) and groups them according to AM repetition rates. This model performs substantially better than previous CASA systems.
