We have undertaken electron micrographic reconstruction of the Caenorhabditis elegans hermaphrodite uterus and determined the correspondence between cells defined by their lineage history and differentiated cell types. In this organ, many cells do not move during morphogenesis and the cell lineage may function to put cells where they are needed. Differentiated uterine cell types include the tor...

There are two very interesting aspects to the evolution of sex chromosomes: what happens after recombination between these chromosome pairs stops and why suppressed recombination evolves. The former question has been intensively studied in a diversity of organisms, but the latter has been studied largely theoretically. To obtain empirical data, we used codominant genic markers in genetic mappin...

Eighty-six specimens of longnose spurdog Squalus blainville were examined for determination some bio-ecogical features. During the study, one was determined as a hermaphrodite with clasper and yolk sac formation. This very rare case in elasmobranch is report hermaphroditism recorded from Aegean Sea.

D. Lewandowska's book is a very interesting monograph on the perception of intersexuality in antiquity. The terms androgynus and hermaphrodite are most often identified with each other as an intersex person. This explanation appears first LSJ. reviewed shows that term androgine was viewed effeminate male.

Papaya (Carica papaya L.) plants are polygamous, with female, male, and hermaphroditic flowers. To understand the roles of MADS-box genes in flower development and sex determination, we cloned cDNAs of E-class genes CpMADS1 and CpMADS3 and a TM6 lineage of the B-class gene CpMADS2 from young flower buds of papaya. Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and real-time PCR analys...

How do animals integrate internal drives and external environmental cues to coordinate behaviors? We address this question by studying mate-searching behavior in C. elegans. C. elegans males explore their environment in search of mates (hermaphrodites) and will leave food if mating partners are absent. However, when mates and food coincide, male exploratory behavior is suppressed and males are ...

Seminal fluid is an important part of the ejaculate of internally fertilizing animals. This fluid contains substances that nourish and activate sperm for successful fertilization. Additionally, it contains components that influence female physiology to further enhance fertilization success of the sperm donor, possibly beyond the recipient's optimum. Although evidence for such substances abounds...
