Endocarditis secondary to Mycobacterium fortuitum is a rare entity often involving prosthetic valves and rarely native valves. Pulmonic valve endocarditis secondary to any organism is rare. We report the first case of native pulmonic valve endocarditis secondary to M. fortuitum and a literature review of native valve M. fortuitum endocarditis.

Introduction Late complications such as hemolysis and thrombus formation in patients with an implanted prosthetic heart valve have been related to fluid dynamic characteristics [ 11. Specific blood flow patterns such as flow reversal and vortex flow have been considered to contribute to thrombus formation [2]. In order to detect alterations of flow fields around prostheses in humans MR velocity...

The clinical and pathologic findings in three patients with bacterial infection at the sites of prosthetic aortic valves are described. Each presented typical clinical features of acute bacterial endocarditis followed by the sudden development of severe and ultimately fatal aortic regurgitation. Pathologically the infectious process was characterized by extensive necrosis of the aortic annulus,...

To determine the incidence and extent of calcification of implanted glutaraldehyde-treated porcine prosthetic heart valves, 82 valves explanted from 73 patients were examined for calcium by radiography and light microscopy. At the time of valve implantation, the patients were 21⁄4/4-76 years old. They included 15 children (patients younger than 15 years of age, mean age at time of valve implant...

We report two patients with a history of prior mitral valve and aortic valve replacement with St. Jude prosthetic valves, who were referred for repeat valve replacement after noninvasive assessment was suggestive of prosthetic valve malfunction. Both patients were managed medically after evaluation with direct left ventricular apical puncture revealed normal hemodynamics in the first and mild a...

Aortic valve replacement is the second most common cardiothoracic procedure in the UK. With an ageing population, there are an increasing number of patients with prosthetic valves that require follow-up. Imaging of prosthetic valves is challenging with conventional echocardiographic techniques making early detection of valve dysfunction or complications difficult. CT has recently emerged as a c...

Patients with symptomatic aortic stenosis have a very poor prognosis on medical treatment. In those with contraindications to surgery, percutaneous valve replacement has been proposed as an alternative. We report on physicians' initial experience in Spain with percutaneous aortic valve replacement. We analyzed inhospital and short-to-medium-term findings in four patients who underwent percutane...

Prosthetic valve endocarditis is an uncommon manifestation of infection with Bartonella species. Herein, we report a case of Bartonella henselae endocarditis involving prosthetic mitral and aortic valves. The patient had a favorable outcome with combined medical and surgical therapy. Concomitant crescentic glomerulonephritis led to an initial mistaken diagnosis of Wegener's granulomatosis.

Whether antithrombotic therapy in elderly patients differs from that in younger populations depends on whether the risk for such bleeding differs in the elderly. Regarding long-term therapy with warfarin derivatives, evidence shows that there is a difference. The anticoagulation response to warfarin is exaggerated with advancing age. This article discusses antithrombotic therapies for valvular ...

An attempt has been made to determine the important criteria for evaluation of various substitute valves from the standpoint of practical clinical experience, and to rate the broadly grouped types of valves with respect to these criteria. Stented fascia lata valves received the highest overall ranking, but, owing to their recent introduction, should probably not be generally adopted by most sur...
