A fragment end ligation-mediated PCR strategy was used to analyze the AscI pulsed-field gel electrophoresis patterns of Listeria monocytogenes epidemic clone II (ECII), which led to the identification of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in prophage regions that differentiated the two ECII outbreak clones. SNPs in prophages that differentiated the outbreak clones of ECIII and -IV were also...

We report a closed genome sequence of group A Streptococcus genotype emm3 (GAS M/emm3) strain STAB902, isolated from a superficial pyodermatitis. The genome is composed of 1,892,124 bp, 6 integrated prophages, and has 1,858 identified coding sequences (CDSs). It has been fitted with the two available invasive GAS M/emm3 strains.

Comparisons of the 1.84-Mb genome of serotype M5 Streptococcus pyogenes strain Manfredo with previously sequenced genomes emphasized the role of prophages in diversification of S. pyogenes and the close relationship between strain Manfredo and MGAS8232, another acute rheumatic fever-associated strain.

The complete genome ofSalmonella entericasubsp.entericaserovar Typhimurium sequence type 19 (ST19) strain YU15, isolated in Yucatán, Mexico, from a human baby stool culture, was determined using PacBio technology. The chromosome contains five intact prophages and theSalmonellagenomic island 1 (SGI1). This strain carries theSalmonellavirulence plasmid pSTV.

P335 group phages represent the most divergent phage group infecting dairy Lactococcus lactis strains and have significant implications for the dairy processing industry. Here, we report the complete genome sequences of eight lactococcal prophages chemically induced from industrial lactococcal strains that propagate lytically on one of two laboratory strains.

Screening for lysogenic lactobacilli in rat fecal samples has identified Lactobacillus murinus EF-1. Whole-genome sequencing revealed a 2.30-Mb draft genome with 39.6% G+C content and 2,196 open reading frames. PHAST analysis identified three intact prophages of 26.1 kb, 25.4 kb, and 49.6 kb in size.

The genus Sinorhizobium/Ensifer mostly groups nitrogen-fixing bacteria that create root or stem nodules on leguminous plants and transform atmospheric nitrogen into ammonia, which improves the productivity of the plants. Although these biotechnologically-important bacteria are commonly found in various soil environments, little is known about their phages. In this study, the genome of Sinorhizo...

A novel bacteriophage infecting Staphylococus pasteuri was isolated during a screen for phages in Antarctic soils. The phage named SpaA1 is morphologically similar to phages of the family Siphoviridae. The 42,784 bp genome of SpaA1 is a linear, double-stranded DNA molecule with 3' protruding cohesive ends. The SpaA1 genome encompasses 63 predicted protein-coding genes which cluster within three...

BACKGROUND We previously showed that zonula occludens toxin (Zot) encoded by Campylobacter concisus zot (808T) gene has the potential to initiate inflammatory bowel disease. This Zot protein caused prolonged intestinal epithelial barrier damage, induced intestinal epithelial and macrophage production of tumor necrosis factor-α and enhanced the responses of macrophages to other microbes. In orde...
