Arbutus andrachne and Platanus orientalis grow naturally in Turkey. They do not occur in stands but can be seen as solitary trees. A. andrachne is seen in coastal parts of Anatolia, whereas P. orientalis can be found from west to the east of Turkey, mostly in river banks. Lipophilic extractives, hydrophilic extractives, and suberin monomers from Arbutus andrachne and Platanus orientalis bark wa...

Amycolatopsis orientalis is the producer of vancomycin, a glycopeptide antibiotic that is used for the treatment of serious infections with Gram-positive bacteria. Here we present the next-generation sequencing (NGS)-based 9.06-Mb draft genome sequence of the type strain Amycolatopsis orientalis subsp. orientalis KCTC 9412 (DSM 40040; ATCC 19795).

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) caused by Leishmania donovani is endemic in northern Ethiopia, where P. orientalis is the most important presumed vector. This study was designed to determine the physiological age structure and the occurrence of Leishmania infection in the vector of VL in Tahtay Adiyabo district, northern Ethiopia. Sand flies were collected using CDC light traps from peridomestic an...

Strains of Amycolatopsis orientalis produce vancomycin or other related glycopeptide antibiotic compounds. Here we report the draft genome sequences of glycopeptide nonproducers Amycolatopsis orientalis subsp. orientalis DSM 43388 and DSM 46075. Their genome information will provide insights into the acquisition and regulation of glycopeptide antibiotic resistance genes.

An Alkanna orientalis leaf and flower extract inhibited the growth of Staphylococcus aureus, a pathogen that causes an estimated 478 000 hospitalizations in the US annually. Bioassay-guided fractionation of A. orientalis resulted in isolation of the flavonoid sarothrin (5,7,4'-trihydroxy-3,6,8-trimethoxyflavone), which inhibited the growth of Mycobacterium smegmatis (MIC 75 µM) and S. aureus (M...

Amycolatopsis orientalis DSM 43387, a clinical isolate from submandibular mycetoma tissue, is one of three plasmid-bearing strains of the genus Amycolatopsis. It degrades aromatic compounds such as m-hydroxybenzoate, but does not produce any antibiotics, in contrast to Amycolatopsis orientalis NBRC 12806T. Phylogenetic analysis based on a complete 16S rRNA gene sequence placed the strain in the...

In this study, esterase isozyme polymorphisms in Boreal-Tertiary origin relict endemic L. orientalis populations were investigated. Four populations located in the Southern and the Southwestern regions of Turkey were screened. Two of these populations (Fethiye-Günlüklü and Fethiye-İnlice) belong to subspecies L. orientalis Mill.var. orientalis. The other two (Muğla-Köyceğiz and Antalya-Gebiz) b...

A bird-parasitic fly, Carnus orientalis Maa, 1968, is recorded for the first time from Japan, and it is taxonomically reexamined on the basis of specimens collected in Okinawa Prefecture. Adult flies were found from nestlings of Ryukyu scops owl (Otus elegans Cassin, 1852), which is a new host for C. orientalis. Bionomic remarks regarding C. orientalis are presented, and akey to the world speci...

BACKGROUND Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) also known as kala-azar is a growing health problem in Ethiopia with an estimated annual VL incidence between 3700 and 7400. The disease is mainly endemic in northwestern parts of the country. The aim of the current study was to determine the sand fly fauna and ecology of Phlebotomus orientalis in two endemic and ecologically distinct areas of northwestern...

We sequenced the genome of Theileria orientalis, a tick-borne apicomplexan protozoan parasite of cattle. The focus of this study was a comparative genome analysis of T. orientalis relative to other highly pathogenic Theileria species, T. parva and T. annulata. T. parva and T. annulata induce transformation of infected cells of lymphocyte or macrophage/monocyte lineages; in contrast, T. oriental...
