Measurements of gross photosynthesis; respiration, rate of net oxygen diffusion, and organic storage are reported for 7 microcosms maintained over periods of 5 to 7 months. Average rates of gross photosynthesis ranged from 0.86 to 1.69 g Oz/m2/day and were related to the amounts of inorganic nutrients added. Average final organic storage was equal to 35.6% of gross photosynthesis. Assumed photo...

The biological reduction of CO2 driven by sunlight via photosynthesis is a crucial process for life on earth. However, the conversion efficiency of solar energy to biomass by natural photosynthesis is low. This translates in bioproduction processes relying on natural photosynthesis that are inefficient energetically. Recently, hybrid photosynthetic technologies with the potential of significant...

We report the draft genome sequence of the purple photosynthetic bacterium Rhodovulum sulfidophilum. The photosynthesis gene cluster comprises two segments-a unique feature among photosynthesis gene clusters of purple bacteria. The genome information will be useful for further analysis of bacterial photosynthesis.

Photosynthesis of most plants decreases rapidly when the leaf temperature drops below 100. In contrast, however, several frost resistant plant species still perform appreciable photosynthesis at temperatures below 50 (8). Vetuhova (14, 15) demonstrated that photosvnthesis at low temperature was related to winter hardiness. When leaves were cooled, she observed a smaller depression of photosynth...

Oxygenic photosynthesis by algae and plants supports much of life on Earth. Several model organisms are used to study this vital process, but the unicellular green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii offers significant advantages for the genetic dissection of photosynthesis. Recent experiments with Chlamydomonas have substantially advanced our understanding of several aspects of photosynthesis, incl...

The rate of photosynthesis under high light (1000 micromole quanta per square meter per second) and at 25 degrees C was measured during development of the third leaf on wheat plants and compared with the activity of several photosynthetic enzymes and the level of metabolites. The rate of photosynthesis reached a maximum the 7th day after leaf emergence and declined thereafter. There was a high ...

To understand the physiological basis of genetic variation and resulting quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for photosynthesis in a rice (Oryza sativa L.) introgression line population, 13 lines were studied under drought and well-watered conditions, at flowering and grain filling. Simultaneous gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements were conducted at various levels of incident irrad...

Several nuclear mutations were recovered that suppress the photosensitivity associated with the Chamydomonas reinhardii chloroplast mutant rcl-u-1-10-6C, which is defective in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase. Two of the suppressor mutations affect other components of photosynthesis. These results show that suppressors of photosensitivity are sufficiently common to permit the rec...

Mechanical irritation of trigger hairs and subsequent generation of action potentials have significant impact on photosynthesis and respiration in carnivorous Venus flytrap (Dionaea muscipula). Action potential-mediated inhibition of photosynthesis and stimulation of respiration is confined only to the trap and was not recorded in adjacent photosynthetic lamina. We showed that the main primary ...

Reduction of hydraulic conductance to the canopy has been shown to result in stomatal responses to limit transpiration. To test for similar responses to perturbations of the hydraulic network in leaves, we simultaneously measured leaf gas exchange with spatially explicit chlorophyll-a fluorescence and leaf temperature to examine the effects of cutting a primary leaf vein in Helianthus annuus. W...
