The current study explores the appraisal and description of photography in Israeli archives in the light of paradigmatic changes in archival theory. The review of the field's literature focuses on current attitudes towards the appraisal and description of photography in archives. Signal acquisition is a noisy business. In photographic images, there is noise within the light intensity signal (e.g., photon noise), and additional noise can arise within the sensor (e.g., thermal noise in a CMOS chip), as well as in subsequent processing (e.g., quantization). Image noise can be quite noticeable, as in images captured by inexpensive cameras built into cellular telephones, or ...

Photoconsortium is an association of photographic archives that contributed over 450.000 images of early photography to Europeana. In this contribution we discuss lessons learned, in particular on digitization and copy‐ right issues and describe the activities involved in managing state-of-the-art digi‐ tized photographic archives. We discuss follow-on project activities such as Europeana Space...

Photography is a 2-dimensional medium which represents 3-dimensional space, as a central projection on a plane. As it is possible to represent 3D space by a photograph, it is also possible, using mathematical methods, to obtain data about 3-dimensional structures from the data registered on photographs. We used two methods to obtain spatial data from photographs: restitution of perspective imag...

The compositing of two or more people into a single image is a common form of manipulation. We describe how such composites can be detected by estimating a camera’s intrinsic parameters from the image of a person’s eyes. Differences in these parameters across the image are used as evidence of tampering.

Although photographic papers have been manufactured for at least as long as film has been made, there is little in the literature on their image microstructure properties. One of the earliest comprehensive experimental investigations of the “sharpness” (really the MTF) of photographic papers is that reported by Ruth Stapleton.1 One of the general conclusions of her work was that the Modulation ...
